Truth is better than fiction

While it is clear from the beginning that this was fiction, it is well enough written that one wonders why the authors didn't just right the true story. it is more compelling than the "active history" touted at the beginning. I will go back to real history on my next read.

Conflicting Causes

This is the most thorough study of this conflict that I have read/heard. I enjoyed the professor's enthusiasm for the subject and appreciate his knowledge of the subject. My next quest is to study some of the specific battles and the daily life of soldiers to fill in some of the gaps. The gaps are not a negative reflection on the course but a reflection of the enormity of the subject itself. If there is any criticism to be mentioned it would be in regard to the last chapter dismissal of the legitimacy of the "Lost Cause". He himself had earlier demonstrated that very few actually fought over slavery on either side. While I agree that the political aspects of the war were strongly tied to slavery, the motivation of those who fought was not.

Thorough Work

This is an excellent historical piece. It not only captures a great deal of history but also gives great insight into the man John Adams. For those who complain about the silent gaps and the breaths of the narrator I can only say : really?
