We live in a different world... gender lines are blurred, the customary binary of male/female is no longer part of our lexicon. Yet our friends who identify outside of the binary are often shunned, terrorized, and belittled by those who choose not to understand the innate pull of gender identification.
Sarah McBride stands as a beacon of hope for those who struggle, those who celebrate and those whose hearts are open.
This is a fascinating tale of her transition and her emerging role as a political leader. She relates her apprehension, fear, and longing as she becomes the person she is today.
As a retired health care provider, I've witnessed many transitions and guided many on their journeys. This book closely mirrors my own experiences with those individuals and should be required reading for all!
Sarah, my heart was breaking as I read the struggles, but I saw your light come forth in a most beautiful way.

I really like to connect with the characters I read about, but it was impossible with this book. The narration is dry and without much inflection, and it would have been much better if it was a historical novel based on these stories. I couldn't tell one woman from the next!
These women had remarkable skills that saved many of their lives toward the end of WWII. Their stories deserve better treatment than this book provides.

I've not read anything by Robin Cook in ages so thought I'd give this a try, but I quit halfway through. I figured out the plot pretty quickly but the never-ending violence turned me off.

I finally finished this, but nearly gave up several times. The narrator lacks inflection, and was almost monotone regardless of the story. Usually, I can picture the characters in a book, but nothing about this book granted me that pleasure. Yes, interesting story of nurses held captive by the Japanese but lacks feeling. I like Heather Morris' work but this one left me cold.

Imagine if Covid had not happened... that's the premise of this book about another viral pandemic and the friends who not only at the core, but who all suffered greatly along the way. I loved the descriptions of the viral biology and epidemiology conquests. The plot twists were entertaining as I tried to second guess the outcomes. Some of the accents were a bit off but overall, the narrators were really on the ball. A great read.

I've read all of Martin's books available and this is the weakest so far. It jumps around a lot from the main characters' adventures in med school to their days in private practice. The biggest disappointment comes at the end when the source of the friction between the main characters comes to a head. All I could say was WHO CARES?

Too much Patterson and not enough Crichton

I have read everything Michael Crichton wrote, and this was a big let down. Maybe he sketched out a plot but it reads like every other Patterson book. Far fetched to say the least.
I usually like Scott Brick, but he over emoted and it sounded like everybody was out of breath all the time. The info about the volcanos was interesting at some level. But the plot was ridiculous. Like get to the point already. I knew immediately that Mac would save the day, like some kind of volcanic superman. The characters were one dimensional at best, I couldn't even picture them in my mind!
Let the reader beware - there are a lot of grisly deaths, which I didn't appreciate.
Walk on by.... disappointing overall.

All this needed was the organ music in the background. Totally predictable. I'm glad the author has delved into more meaty topics with her later books, romance can only be told in so many ways.

This has to be one of my favorite books of the year! As a new nursing grad, I served in a tertiary medical hospital in 1971-72, as the Viet Nam war was winding down. My cover story was that I worked in the maternity wing, but the truth is that I floated to every department in the hospital from ER to whatever. We often met the C-9 Nightingales on the tarmac, taking report from flight nurses bringing wounded out of country to our care before they came back to the US. I watched men die from burns, wounds, infections and the like. I held the hand of an officer as he succumbed to 3rd degree napalm burs. I wrote letters for them, gave their meds, wheeled them to the OR, whatever they needed. This is an incredibly factual (altho fictional) account of what nurses did during the Viet Nam war... and the wounds we carried back to the states. It wasn't until the TV Series China Beach that I began to heal, and now I can say that this book brought back memories that no longer cripple me.
I stood with tears in my eyes at the Viet Nam Nurses Memorial in Washington DC, honoring all who served in that conflict. I knew them, and now you will too.
Thanks to Kristin Hannah, the narrator, and all involved for bringing this critical story to light.

After being involved with Days for Girls for the past many years, this long awaited book deepened my commitment to the project and the people we serve. While I've heard Celeste speak on many occasions, this book filled in the gaps, and while I have heard many of the stories before, hearing them in her voice made it all the more special. I laughed and cried, and felt each emotion as Celeste recounted not only her story, but the story of Days for Girls. In the US, we take disposable menstrual products for granted and don't often think about the women who have no access, no money, no education, and no hope. This book brings it all together. And now I must get back to sewing for Days for Girls.
