Historia
Hans Castorp is, on the face of it, an ordinary man in his early 20s, on course to start a career in ship engineering in his home town of Hamburg, when he decides to travel to the Berghof Santatorium in Davos. The year is 1912 and an oblivious world is on the brink of war. Castorp’s friend Joachim Ziemssen is taking the cure and a three-week visit seems a perfect break before work begins. But when Castorp arrives he is surprised to find an established community of patients, and little by little, he gets drawn into the closeted life and the individual personalities of the residents.

Masterpiece
Revisado: 08-03-23
One of the great stories in world literature. A masterpiece of irony. We are all Hans Castorp, the world’s problem child. Three masterful accomplishments: Mann’s story, the translation, and the magnificent reading. To flesh out your understanding of Mann, I recommend Colm Tobin’s wonderful book The Magician, also available on Audible.

Historia
Nogales is a border town caught between Mexico and the United States of America. A 40-foot steel fence runs through its centre, separating the prosperous US side from the impoverished Mexican side. It is a fascinating site of tension, now more than ever, as the town fills with hopeful border crossers and the deportees who have been caught and brought back. And it is here that Paul Theroux will begin his journey into the culturally rich but troubled heart of modern Mexico.

Great Book

I am a writer sterlingbennett.com.
I have lived I in Mexico for 20 years. This book has filled in a lot of holes. Knowledge of Mexico is like knowing the ocean. There currents swirl and change. The beauty and danger are always the same. Theroux is a honest and compassionate pilot. This book is the first thing you read, if you are moving here. This is the place to come if you are a painter or a writer. It will wake you up to the artist inside you, where you wake up to secret wonder landscapes in your dozing soul.
