Historia
Nowhere else in Britain in the modern era, or indeed in Europe, did civil order break down over such a wide area, or for such a long time, as on the border country between Scotland and England. For more than a century, the hoofbeats of countless raiding parties drummed over the border. From Dumfriesshire to the high wastes of East Cumbria, from Roxburghshire to Redesdale, from the lonely valley of Liddesdale to the fortress city of Carlisle, swords and spears spoke while the law remained silent

Almost fiction like, but the stories real
Revisado: 02-02-25
Being a descendent of a border clan, the Turnbulls, the colorful information embedded within stories and excellent descriptions of life as it were during the time of the Border Reivers was entrancing to consume. King James exiled many border families including mine to the Ulster colony in the early 17th century and many did not stay more than a couple generations before either voluntarily or involuntarily being sent to the American colonies. Five Turnbull brothers arrived in the Philadelphia area in the 1740s and 4 of the 5 migrated even further south to the Augusta County Virginia area. These brothers with the renamed Trimble and their progeny are scattered throughout US history, holding US Supreme Court, state Governor, military leadership positions and playing key roles in establishing the states of Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Maryland. George Washington once commented that he would rather have one Scots-Irish fighter than 10 of any other heritage. The Border society was criminal and brutal but it produced arguably the most efficient fighting man the world has ever known. Why is America great? It is this fighting spirit that we owe to the Scots-Irish pre-Revolutionary immigrants.

Not science at all, just Postmodernist Bullsh1t
Revisado: 06-07-24
some good practical advice but claiming her advice is based on science isn't accurate. She goes into the fantasy world of dozens of genders, sex transitioning nonsense? etc. I absolutely do not recommend this book really to anybody, but for sure to those that don't buy into the Postmodernist "woke" bullsh1t being spewed forth into our world. Thumbs absolutely down on this drivel.

The issue with communism, socializn. well... really any collectivist governmental or social contract isn't ideological fallaciousness. The issue is in the practicality of implementing any such system. People who gain power in collectivist systems always have and always will evolve to brutal & deadly totalitarianism to make the "system" work. This literature provides historical, factual evidence of how and why this happens.

Historia
Philosophy begins with questions about the nature of reality and how we should live. These were the concerns of Socrates, who spent his days in the ancient Athenian marketplace asking awkward questions, disconcerting the people he met by showing them how little they genuinely understood. This engaging book introduces the great thinkers in Western philosophy and explores their most compelling ideas about the world and how best to live in it.

Cornwell succeeds with Manasses II
Revisado: 07-02-21
Listening to Cornwell's account of this US Civil War battle almost made me feel like I was present in the ordeal. I am a Southerner by birth and resent my country's "black and white" assessment of the Civil War. Cornwell portrays life as it really is in his novels and in this as well as all his fiction he correctly represents the fact that good men and women were involved on both sides in wars and battles, and the US Civil War is no exception to that truth. Thank you, Bernard Cornwell, for your rational and realistic portrayal of life, a refreshing break from the narrow-minded politics and so-called "progressive" thought coming from the faux intelligentsia these days.
