Loved the writing, the thoughtful treatment of issues like aging, fitness culture, marriage roles, introvert vs extrovert, changing roles in a relationship, etc. HOWEVER, I have to wonder if the narrator has ever actually heard a human man speak. She did a great job with narrating the protagonist, Serenata, but all the men sound like weird caricatures, ESPECIALLY Remington, the husband. The voice she used for him for the entire book was excruciating to listen to … sounded like a very angry cartoon rooster … really detracted from the dialog between husband and wife (and there is a lot of dialog), since it was impossible to take the husband seriously, with the ranting monotone the narrator chose. By contrast, the wife’s “voice” was carefully nuanced and modulated, pleasant and easy to listen to. It’s too bad this quirky narration detracted from an excellent novel.

Listened while out walking and was hooked from the first lines. Well-written, well-crafted, and, of course, the narration/acting is truly wonderful. Just the right length to contain the friendship between these two women over one particular summer. I also really appreciated the ending, with a glimpse into their future, and the sad truth that lives move on and friendships fade.

Enjoyed every page — great memoir, perfect narration (of course!) and Molly Shannon is the best. The details of her years at SNL were fascinating. Definitely recommend.

Thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful writing and elegant narration. Profound without being preachy. Thought-provoking but extremely approachable. Bravo.

I loved this book as much as I've loved ALL of Elizabeth Strout's novels. I can't imagine a better narrator for this book than Kimberly Farr (and I'm REALLY particular about narrators) . . . I looked forward to listening during my daily walks and truly missed these characters when the book ended. Strout's characters are authentic and, oh, so human . . . I truly enjoyed entering their world for a few days while listening to Oh, William! Looking forward to Strout's next novel, which I hope will be here soon!

Really wanted to like this book — New York, family saga, academic setting … kept hoping it would improve, but found it poorly paced, self-indulgent, shallow and boring. Made it all the way through, and don’t feel that it was a good investment of time. The narrator did a good job.

Great story, superb narration; sorry it didn’t last longer. With the New York City setting, sophisticated venues and scheming characters, I kept visualizing the story as a Woody Allen movie. Loved it.

“Meh” ... the author indulges in overly playful “asides” that are not as funny or clever as she intends them to be. The concept of an introverted quiet life being taken over by an unexpectedly discovered extended family is interesting, and I enjoyed that aspect of the plot. However, I tired of reading about thirty-something millennials who acted and reacted like middle school students. Disappointing.

Enjoyed the plot and writing, appreciated the weaving together of the two timelines in the novel. Good expose of the corrupt and tragic adoption situation of the time. I did think some of the major plot development was overly simplistic, relying on coincidence and "being at the right place at the right time" . . . . The narration was generally very good, without being overly dramatic, which I consider a plus. However, one of the narrators (Emily Rankin), who reads the voice of Avery in the current-day timeline, always sounds "wet" and "spitty," for lack of a better term. She truly sounds as she's spraying when she speaks. Constantly. This is very distracting and made it annoying to listen to the book for long periods of time.

Enjoyed every minute listening to this book. Stephen King brings his characters to life in such subtle ways -- you get to know them and care about them without even realizing you've been drawn in. This book is character-driven, with a lot of humor interspersed with a very good story. The narrator, Frances Sternhagen, adds so much to an already magnificent story. The entire book is written in first-person, as the title character dictates a long statement to the police. Ms. Sternhagen is the perfect voice for Dolores, bringing this character to life, with her Maine accent and New England nuances. This book will stay with me for a long time. Can't recommend it highly enough.
