Historia
Bradbury's Mars is a place of hope, dreams, and metaphor - of crystal pillars and fossil seas - where a fine dust settles on the great, empty cities of a silently destroyed civilization. It is here the invaders have come to despoil and commercialize, to grow and to learn - first a trickle, then a torrent, rushing from a world with no future toward a promise of tomorrow. The Earthman conquers Mars...and then is conquered by it, lulled by dangerous lies of comfort and familiarity, and enchanted by the lingering glamour of an ancient, mysterious native race.

Brilliant writing but the 1950s did not last that
Revisado: 06-26-20
I've always loved the poetic writing in this book. But it has a few wrinkles. Black people leave for Mars to escape Jim Crow -- in 2003! And we never find out whether they arrive. And the women are all either Donna Reed or Aunt Bea from Mayberry. 1950s women, in the 21st century.
It's beautifully written. But it's more than a little funny that he thought the 1950s would last that long, and travel to Mars in 2003.

Pete Banning was Clanton's favorite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, a father, a neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

All this and for what?
Revisado: 03-09-19
I expected a kind of detective story aimed at rooting out the truth. That's not what this is. The details of the legal proceedings laid out in excruciating detail. But the mystery isn't cleared up until the very end, and the truth turns out to be banal in the extreme.

Historia
When editor Susan Ryeland is given the manuscript of Alan Conway's latest novel, she has no reason to think it will be much different from any of his others. After working with the best-selling crime writer for years, she's intimately familiar with his detective, Atticus Pünd, who solves mysteries disturbing sleepy English villages. An homage to queens of classic British crime such as Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, Alan's traditional formula has proved hugely successful.

Historia
In this first novel, we are introduced to suave, handsome Tom Ripley: a young striver, newly arrived in the heady world of Manhattan in the 1950s. A product of a broken home, branded a "sissy" by his dismissive Aunt Dottie, Ripley becomes enamored of the moneyed world of his new friend, Dickie Greenleaf. This fondness turns obsessive when Ripley is sent to Italy to bring back his libertine pal, but he grows enraged by Dickie's ambivalent feelings for Marge, a charming American dilettante.

The subtext makes it work
Revisado: 06-28-17
Tom Ripley lives in a society that would have him kill off part of his personality in order to fit in. It's that mostly-buried truth that gives this story its deeper meaning and a significance that rises above that of the ordinary crime thriller.

Ray Bradbury’s moving recollection of a vanished golden era remains one of his most enchanting novels. Dandelion Wine stands out in the Bradbury literary canon as the author’s most deeply personal work, a semiautobiographical recollection of a magical small-town summer in 1928.

Luminous writing but
Revisado: 06-02-17
This novel contains a lot of spectacular poetic lyrical writing. But now I know what a plot is for. There were a few moments here where I felt like I was lost in the wilderness without a map.

Brilliant work, richly told
Revisado: 04-05-17
I was hesitant to read yet another slavery novel as I have already read some great ones, including The Good Lord Bird, Kindred, and The Moor's Account. But Oprah and the folk who give out the National Book Award are right about this one. It takes you through a lot of events that seem fantastical and even demonic compared with today's standards. Colson Whiteheads shepherds us through awfulness with grace and sensitivity and an unsparing eye towards cruelty. I am very glad I decided to pick this book.

Historia
Manjunath Kumar is 14 and living in a slum in Mumbai. He knows he is good at cricket - if not as good as his older brother, Radha. He knows that he fears and resents his domineering and cricket-obsessed father, admires his brilliantly talented sibling, and is fascinated by curious scientific facts and the world of CSI. But there are many things, about himself and about the world, that he doesn't know. Sometimes it even seems as though everyone has a clear idea of who Manju should be except Manju himself.

Nuanced and surprising
Revisado: 01-10-17
I greatly enjoyed "WhiteTiger" and this is perhaps even better because it deals with brothers and love. Adiga has a feel for India that compares with Flannery O'Conner's feel for the American South.

Historia
French literature may be said to begin with the ninth century "Song of Roland," and it has since then churned out masterpiece after masterpiece in every century right up to the present. Beginning with Balzac and Dumas in the early part of the nineteenth century and proceeding to Sartre and Camus at the midpoint of the twentieth, the stories in this collection showcase the talents of some of the greatest French masters of the short story.

Dumas has written so much that is classic, it's easy to overlook the other great storytellers of France. This volume makes for a good introduction.
