Historia
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

As I listened to this, I felt like I was part of a private club, who knew all of the pieces that were left out for the sake of brevity. My mind immediately filled in all of the spaces with so much joy, I could not be more delighted.

Historia
In this exquisite story of family, food, grief, and endurance, Michelle Zauner proves herself far more than a dazzling singer, songwriter, and guitarist. With humor and heart, she tells of growing up one of the few Asian-American kids at her school in Eugene, Oregon; of struggling with her mother's particular high expectations of her; of a painful adolescence; of treasured months spent in her grandmother's tiny apartment in Seoul, where she and her mother would bond, late at night, over heaping plates of food.

Authors should never read their own works
Revisado: 09-14-21
Being a decent author, and I’m not claiming that Michelle is that, is one thing but having the chops to read a story in an engaging way, that’s something else. If you check on this site for the sample, you will notice that she never changes her inflection, seldom changes the volume or pitch etc. It is deadly boring to listen to.

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Written with no heart
Revisado: 03-09-18
Vance has no apparent emotional intelligence, and really doesn’t share his process with us. He tells a flat story where he miraculously winds up being a roaring success in his life.
His proclamations about why white people are poor, or based on his specific experience, and not buy any credible studies.
The overarching theme of white people are poor because they’re lazy and do drugs is simply offensive and incorrect.
It’s understandable that Trump supporters like this book, and are using it as some kind of “Bible”, because basically he espouses their party line which is there’s no way government can help, only hinder, and success is based on bootstrap efforts.
My bookclub read this and as you can imagine almost to the woman, they all said gee this guy is really shallow and has no interest faction.
I think Vance’s next job will probably be doing something on FOXNews.

contrived and ridiculous ending
Revisado: 12-28-08
nothing in the book would lead you to believe the ending that wroblewski came up with.
it was as if he ran out of ideas at the end and decided to finish the book in the most abrupt manner possible just to be done with it. no matter that it was out of sync with the entire rest of the very good book. jarringingly wrong.
sadly, the ending left me NEVER wanting to spend another second with this author who entranced and seduced me for 21 hours only to suddenly drop me and walk away. i'm actually a little bitter.
i suggest that if you want to listen, then don't listen to the last hour. make up your own ending. whether it's a happy or sad one, it will be better than wroblewski's.

Jumping around in time...
Revisado: 09-11-08
...when it works, it works! This book truly showed the mastery of that device. It got a little heavy handed near the end, when the author went off on her political thesis (albeit good, made the read a bit jarring out of the blue). Reader beware of some very graphic slaughterhouse language, again, completely out of sync w/the rest of the book. That said, it's compelling and I'd recommend it.

It was so good to hear Noel Coward himself read a few of his brilliant works. The other pieces were very funny read by others. I'm so glad I added this to my collection.

Folksy and funny, and a good puzzling mystery. I will definitely look for more Gustav and Otto "Holmes" prowling the range.
