Historia
A powerfully and brilliantly crafted novel, Bodily Harm is the story of Rennie Wilford, a young journalist whose life has begun to shatter around the edges. Rennie flies to the Caribbean to recuperate, and on the tiny island of St. Antoine she is confronted by a world where her rules for survival no longer apply. By turns comic, satiric, relentless, and terrifying, Margaret Atwood's Bodily Harm is ultimately an exploration of the lust for power, both sexual and political, and the need for compassion that goes beyond what we ordinarily mean by love.

Decisions In Uncertain Situations
Revisado: 03-13-25
This started a bit slowly, but momentum built continuously into a well-structured story about ways we navigate through turmoil and uncertainty. Nebulous situations and characters brought to mind Graham Greene, Patricia Highsmith and Lawrence Osborne.

Historia
Escaping New York for the anonymity of Bangkok, Sarah Mullins arrives in Thailand with a suitcase of money and a deception she holds close to her chest. Her plan is to lie low and map out her next move in a high-end apartment complex called the Kingdom, whose glass-fronted façade boasts views of the bustling city and glimpses into the vast honeycomb of lives within. It is not long before she meets the alluring Mali, doing laps in the apartment pool, a half-Thai tenant determined to bring the quiet American out of her shell.

Moody Novel

I most enjoyed the moody, languid atmosphere in this novel. It’s almost a character in itself.

Historia
In medieval times, a pilgrimage gave the average Joe his only break from the daily grind. For Gideon Lewis-Kraus, it promises a different kind of escape. Determined to avoid the kind of constraint that kept his father, a gay rabbi, closeted until midlife, he has moved to anything-goes Berlin. But the surfeit of freedom there has begun to paralyze him, and when a friend extends a drunken invitation to join him on an ancient pilgrimage route across Spain, he grabs his sneakers, glad of the chance to be committed to something and someone.

“This is a story about an idea that I have,” Americana legend and self-proclaimed “recovering folk singer” Steve Earle states early in his enthralling Words + Music performance. “This job of mine becomes an artform spontaneously in 1965 - when Bob Dylan wants to be John Lennon, and John Lennon wants to be Bob Dylan, whether either one of them would admit it or not - and in that moment, rock and roll becomes art."

Historia
In a working-class town in a county west of London, a schoolgirl scribbles stories in the back pages of her exercise book, intoxicated by the first sparks of her imagination. As she grows, everything and everyone she encounters become fuel for a burning talent. The large Russian man in the ancient maroon car who careens around the grocery store where she works as a checkout clerk, and slips her a copy of Beyond Good and Evil. The growing heaps of other books in which she loses–and finds–herself. Even the derailing of a friendship, in a devastating violation.

Best Book I Read in 2022
Revisado: 12-30-22
This book was amazing. I listened to the author read the novel (on Audible) and her pacing and vocalization added to the experience. I say “experience” because this book really is different. It’s almost like being inside the author’s head as she thinks, remembers and experiences life real-time. Wonderful use of language. I loved it.

Historia
Two women. Many aliases. Meg Williams. Maggie Littleton. Melody Wilde. Different names for the same person, depending on the town, depending on the job. She's a con artist who erases herself to become whoever you need her to be—a college student. A life coach. A real estate agent. Nothing about her is real. She slides alongside you and tells you exactly what you need to hear, and by the time she's done, you've likely lost everything.

Outstanding
Revisado: 05-18-22
This was my era. I was a boy approaching life at about the same point in life as the protagonist. I had the same questions about growing up, and had similar conversations with influential men. Men who would guide me through important transitions. Needless to say this book resonated with me. Even if my age and circumstances were different, this is a well-crafted novel that pulls the listener along, yearning for more.

Historia
As a teenager, Kate Harris realized that the career she craved - to be an explorer, equal parts swashbuckler and metaphysician - had gone extinct. From what she could tell of the world from small-town Ontario, the likes of Marco Polo and Magellan had mapped the whole earth; there was nothing left to be discovered. Looking beyond this planet, she decided to become a scientist and go to Mars. In between studying at Oxford and MIT, Harris set off by bicycle down the fabled Silk Road with her childhood friend Mel.

As always, Reacher has no particular place to go, and all the time in the world to get there. One morning he ends up in a town near Pleasantville, Tennessee. But there’s nothing pleasant about the place. In broad daylight Reacher spots a hapless soul walking into an ambush. “It was four against one” . . . so Reacher intervenes, with his own trademark brand of conflict resolution. The man he saves is Rusty Rutherford, an unassuming IT manager, recently fired after a cyberattack locked up the town’s data, records, information . . . and secrets.

Disappointment
Revisado: 07-30-21
I usually enjoy books in this series. Not this one. The plot is ridiculous and unbelievable. And the principal character now basically wears a Superman cape. Altogether disappointing.
