Historia
In this sensitive and lucid account, Pauline Boss explains that, all too often, those confronted with ambiguous loss fluctuate between hope and hopelessness. Suffered too long, these emotions can deaden feeling and make it impossible for people to move on with their lives. Yet the central message of this book is that they can move on. Drawing on her research and clinical experience, Boss suggests strategies that can cushion the pain and help families come to terms with their grief.

An incredibly helpful book!
Revisado: 02-18-24
The concept of ambiguous loss has been a game changer for me. And this book is written for a general audience, with lots of helpful and interesting anecdotes. It works well as an audiobook.

Historia
Eleanor knows she's a mess. But today she will tackle the little things. She will shower and get dressed. She will have her poetry and yoga lessons after dropping off her son, Timby. She won't swear. She will initiate sex with her husband, Joe. But before she can put her modest plan into action - life happens. Today, it turns out, is the day Timby has decided to fake sick to weasel his way into his mother's company. It's also the day Joe has chosen to tell his office - but not Eleanor - that he's on vacation.

Mostly great, but...
Revisado: 12-18-16
I adore Maria Semple and her honest, self -aware and yet completely clueless characters. This book is a delight. The narrator is quite good, but (yes, here's the but) if she had mispronounced one more word I might have dropped my iPhone in the sea and moved on. These are supposed to be SMART people, they know how to pronounce words in their mother tongue. Why didn't the director or producer catch the numerous, distracting errors? I have no idea.

Historia
With more than two million copies of her novels sold, New York Times best-selling author Geraldine Brooks has achieved both popular and critical acclaim. Now, Brooks takes on one of literature's richest and most enigmatic figures: a man who shimmers between history and legend. Peeling away the myth to bring David to life in Second Iron Age Israel, Brooks traces the arc of his journey from obscurity to fame, from shepherd to soldier, from hero to traitor, from beloved king to murderous despot and into his remorseful and diminished dotage.

Exquisite fiction
Revisado: 12-14-15
I've never read a better work of fiction based on the Bible. Brooks is a gifted storyteller who respects her source material and her audience while still boldly imagining and reimagining many iconic characters and stories. Breathtaking.

Marilynne Robinson has built a sterling reputation as a writer of sharp, subtly moving prose, not only as a major American novelist, but also as a rigorous thinker and incisive essayist. In When I Was a Child I Read Books she returns to and expands upon the themes which have preoccupied her work with renewed vigor.

Not all agile ad fans will love this.

Serious and thought-provoking reflections from a quiet and independent thinker. Perhaps not as finely honed prose as in her fiction, but still distinctively and delightfully her voice.
