A very dense, intense, story of a man's search for meaning, which leads him to the dark side of society, where the individual faces the community, where freedom is in danger at every step, where rules seem to be totally absurd, yet accepted by everyone else.
Philosophical and deep, this book is an alegory of society, as we know it. More questions arise as the action progresses. The ending allows for multiple interpretations.

Set in Cyprus, the book offers a sensitive, detailed, thourough, landscape, of foreign workers who take the chance at a better life, for themselves and their families, only to find the promise not so much as expected, but, on the contrary, full of traps, prejudice and sometimes even life-threatening danger.
Presented from two different viewpoints, of a woman and a man who are both closely connected to the main character, who goes missing, but is still always present, charming and elusive, clouded in mystery up until the last chapters, the book reveals a puzzle of deep human connection, motherhood, love, companionship, as well as secrets, hidden actions, dark consequences.
I enjoyed the interludes, short verses from a sort of poem, offering a third perspective onto the unfolding events.
Great work!

This book is a thorough research into the history of colonization, from the perspective of the native tribes who had to endure it, primarily in Canada, also with references to the United States. Immersive into the culture of the natives, the book highlights beautiful elements of beliefs, civilization and organization of people who got displaced and isolated into reservations, under the doctrine of discovery (as the author calls it) expansion of other people. Harsh in the realities it brings forward, including the reeducation and imposed religious conversions, social and political abuses, ranging so far as to generate the disappearing of whole communities, the message of the book is a hopeful one, calling for action in the present to remedy the injustices and to reset the natural order of things, for everyone, starting with the people who were mostly mistreated.
I particularly enjoyed the references to the native beliefs and folklore, the perspective of the land as an entity, to be respected, not simply owned, the idea of kin, as it is masterfully developed throughout the book.

I admire the author's courage to approach such a thought - provoking concept, as the main story line - inherited trauma across many generations.. Joining spirituality with science, dynamic action with deep introspection of the characters, all savourly decorated with sweet hints of love and redemption, this book is a beautiful historical fiction that invites the reader to expand the borders of awareness, as only great literature does.
Realistic and relatable characters, lyrical descriptions of events, witty dialogues, masterfully interwoven timelines, catching narrative.

The author presents an intriguing perspective of historical fiction. The main character, an unlikely witness to events that shaped history, shares a story of survival, destiny, resilience and, above all, humanity. It was interesting to see how the two naratives converged, one going backwards into the past, the other one, evolving chronologically, towards the present. Multiple traumatic events are reported, in a detached voice, thus inspiring hope and the triumph of personal strength, when faced with the injustice of external circumstances.
Another great work from this author!

This book is one of a kind. Presenting five generations of Metis women and at least four generations of bisons, switching between reality and the Afterworld, it challenges the reader to meditate on big existential topics, such as rebirth, continuity of the soul, family, kin, love, forgiveness, collective memory, all brought together by the power of storytelling. Performed on multiple voices, representing different characters, the book creates an immersive experience, where different sentient (and even non-sentient) beings come on stage to fulfill their part in their journey, as well as in everyone else's.
I loved the Grassland character and found the bisons' evolution charming.

A cheerful, motivating, historical fiction book, about the beginning of the 20th century for the American high society in New York. Ambitious female characters from different venues of life come together around an inovative project: to create the first club for women. Different personal challenges are depicted: an achitect struggling to start a career in a male-dominated profession, an actress looking for a more suitable field of work, a socialite who is also fighting for justice and honorable causes, are the focal viewpoints for the unfolding of the story.
Interesting glimpse into a past society, where different values from ours, nowadays, were leading the show.

It was interesting to listen to the explained slogans, grouped together by common themes and graciously connected to the previous and following chapters.
The anecdotes and stories used to make the points were also very inspired.
This book can be experienced in one's own pace.
The narrative style is peaceful, funny and engaging.
Another great work by Pema Chodron!

I enjoyed a lot the kindness of the characters, 3 generations of women, going through different hardships while hanging on to the relationship between them, which is in itself marked by secrets, wounds, forgiveness, healing and growth. Started in Vietnam and reaching the United States, their saga is intertwined with natural simbolysm: the banyan tree, the moon, the shaping power of native legends.
Also a nice story about motherhood in multiple facets: the love, the mistakes, the starting again with the adult children or grandchildren, the spiritual bond that transcends death.
Lovely read!
