Science and Magic
Revisado: 01-29-22
Science and magic at odds then working together is my favorite fusion plot. Melisande and Tristan are endearing just as sweet as the Odas. Their top witch was very entertaining. Good and evil, how powerful tools in the wrong hands can wrought chaos, greed. The plot twists were to be expected, but kept me engaged until the end.

Historia
When Lila Macapagal moves back home to recover from a horrible breakup, her life seems to be following all the typical rom-com tropes. She's tasked with saving her Tita Rosie's failing restaurant, and she has to deal with a group of matchmaking aunties who shower her with love and judgment. But when a notoriously nasty food critic (who happens to be her ex-boyfriend) drops dead moments after a confrontation with Lila, her life quickly swerves from a Nora Ephron romp to an Agatha Christie case.

Humor in my culture
Revisado: 01-24-22
I was born into this culture and found the humor in how it was presented. The concept of food as a way of showing affection is spot on. A family-first approach to life is definitely part of who we are.
I enjoy cozy mysteries and thought the con was pretty obvious from the start. The murderer took a while to figure out, the clues were very vague. But the search for the culprit kept me engaged until the end.
An entertaining story overall!

A unique narrator
Revisado: 01-09-22
I am a fan of original points of view and the narrator of this tale is quite unique. The author’s weaving of different lives and lifetimes into this tale was brilliant. It is a story filled with poignant emotions that tie each character, each timeline together. Love, loss, grief—ever present no matter the age. I enjoyed this heart-filled book and am now a fan of Kate Morton.

Historia
"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of 20 years packs up and heads for greener pastures, and my son heads away to college, that's exactly what my midlife becomes. A do-over. This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at 40 I'm ready to carve my own path. Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills.

Humorous
Revisado: 12-27-21
I chose this because the title made me laugh. The story did too. I related to the main character’s reflections and to the insecurities that held her back. The very attractive “friend” she found in her new life somehow dampened her feminist leanings. She wanted to be independent, but having a strong alpha protecting her was a big part of accomplishing her goal.

A Great Conclusion
Revisado: 12-22-21
This was an emotional roller coaster of pain and triumph. A conclusion of great sorrow and hope. A dream realized in unexpected ways. If you loved these characters in the first two books, they become more human and relatable in this last installment.

Izumi Tanaka has never really felt like she fit in - it isn’t easy being Japanese American in her small, mostly White, northern California town. Raised by a single mother, it’s always been Izumi - or Izzy, because “it’s easier this way” - and her mom against the world. But then Izumi discovers a clue to her previously unknown father’s identity...and he’s none other than the Crown Prince of Japan. Which means outspoken, irreverent Izzy is literally a princess.

Loved This
Revisado: 11-30-21
The story made me giggle like a schoolgirl and cry at multiple points. The tone is young, but the issues tackled are mature and worldly. The generosity of a mother, a girl’s longing for her father, growing up different, wanting to belong, and deciding to forge your own path are inspiringly tackled. I loved the brief discussion about allowing women to rule. All in all a fun read!

A Match 3 Books in the Making
Revisado: 11-01-21
I love idealistic main characters who remain innocent and half-clueless until the end. And though I do not like overly drawn out relationships, the one that concluded in this final book was just right. The partnership of the prince with fire and water in his veins and the healer who wanted to heal their world had my vote since the first book. This was the sweetest ending for these friends who had been through so much.

A Wise Man Knows Who Truly Rules
Revisado: 08-02-21
This conclusion sealed the deal for me. Nikolai is one of my all-time favorite characters. A strong man is not afraid to love a stronger woman, not afraid to kneel before one who can rule his beloved country better. A man who loves his country, does not fight for the throne but for the good of all its people. A brilliant ending for two wonderful couples. This story was beautifully told.

Historia
In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial even proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world. Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger.

An epic myth
Revisado: 06-23-21
Rebecca Roanhorse is a master of mythology. She builds worlds and belief systems that are so original and so fantastic. Then her words pull you into the center of it all, making the story come alive.
Her main characters were all so endearing, there was no way to choose a favorite. Although this book ended in a cliffhanger, I eagerly await the next one and am rooting for all the characters to survive.

Loved the myth & nostalgia
Revisado: 05-07-21
The author is exceptionally brilliant at bringing myths to life. This ghost story is filled with the horrible deeds of a man in his quest for immortality. Yet it is also a tender love story. It is a quest for freedom.
The main characters are very endearing. My favorite was Francis, who in a world of darkness managed to be a light.
Fantasy, horror, and romance fans will enjoy this.
