Historia
Two years have passed since the events of the bestselling Christine Falls, and much has changed for Quirke, the irascible, formerly hard-drinking Dublin pathologist. His beloved Sarah is dead, the Judge lies in a convent hospital paralyzed by a devastating stroke, and Phoebe, Quirke's long-denied daughter, has grown increasingly withdrawn and isolated. With much to regret from his last inquisitive foray, Quirke ought to know better than to let his curiosity get the best of him.

Darkly Irish mystery
Revisado: 12-29-12
This is an engrossing and darkly moody mystery, very well narrated. Several surprising turns of event, and interesting characters. I will read more of Black's books, for sure.

Historia
Heloise considers it a blessing to be a person who seldom attracts attention. In her suburb, she's just a mom, the young widow with the forgettable job, who somehow never misses a soccer game. In the state capital, she's the redheaded lobbyist with a good cause and a mediocre track record. But in discreet hotel rooms throughout the area, she's the woman of your dreams - if you can afford the hourly fee. For more than a decade, Heloise believed she was safe, managing to keep up this rigidly compartmentalized life. But her secret life is under siege. One county over, another so-called suburban madam has been found dead in her car, an apparent suicide.

A suspenseful, well written book

I was very happy to discover Laura Lippman. She is an excellent writer, tells a good story, and sends an intelligent message. Easy reading. Not intellectual, but a real pleasure. The narrator was very good.

Historia
The stories in This Is How You Lose Her, by turns hilarious and devastating, raucous and tender, lay bare the infinite longing and inevitable weaknesses of our all-too-human hearts. They capture the heat of new passion, the recklessness with which we betray what we most treasure, and the torture we go through - "the begging, the crawling over glass, the crying" - to try to mend what we've broken beyond repair. They recall the echoes that intimacy leaves behind, even where we thought we did not care.

A wonderful writer with a unique voice
Revisado: 11-29-12
Junot Diaz is a wonderful writer who gives a strong voice to Dominican culture. He writes about a world I've not experienced, but it rings true. The stories are sad and funny, mean and generous, and to hear Diaz read them himself is a special treat.

exciting story, bad writing
Revisado: 11-29-12
I had forgotten what a bad writer Nelson DeMille is. he spins a good yarn, lots of suspense, but after a couple of hours i couldn't stand hearing "she informed me," "I advised him," etc., all in the misguided attempt to avoid "I said" (which isn't even noticeable and moves a story along), I gave up. There are other aspects to his bad writing, which i won't list, except to say that he writes the same book over and over, longer and longer.
The narration was fine.

On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

Engrossing and exciting but a let-down ending
Revisado: 09-15-12
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I found the ending unsatisfying.
If you’ve listened to books by Gillian Flynn before, how does this one compare?
Haven't listened to others.
Have you listened to any of Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. but they were very good performers here. I would definitely listen to more books narrated by either of them.
Did Gone Girl inspire you to do anything?
Very funny. No.
Any additional comments?
As a story about a psychopath and her victims, it was very engrossing, but the story fell apart for me when, at the end, the book became a version of "No Exit."

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

fascinating, horrifying story, very well narrated
Revisado: 08-13-12
If you could sum up The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks in three words, what would they be?
fascinating, horrifying, long.
What did you like best about this story?
I can't say this was likable story. The medical/scientific history was the most interesting. The human story was very disturbing.
Have you listened to any of Cassandra Campbell and Bahni Turpin ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I don't think i have heard other performances by these people, but i would be happy to. they were very good.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Several moments, especially those about Henrietta's incarcerated daughter.
Any additional comments?
I'm very glad to have listened to this book. Tho it was awfully long, and at times terribly painful to read about, it was full of history and human interest.
