Historia
In the final book of his astonishing career, Carl Sagan brilliantly examines the burning questions of our lives, our world, and the universe around us. These luminous, entertaining essays travel both the vastness of the cosmos and the intimacy of the human mind, posing such fascinating questions as how did the universe originate and how will it end, and how can we meld science and compassion to meet the challenges of the coming century?

waste of time
Revisado: 03-26-24
While it started off with promise, it quickly became a collection of disparate thoughts on unconnected and uninteresting topics. My first read of Sagan. I hope his other books deliver.

In the late 1930s, 16-year-old Billy Parham captures a she-wolf that has been marauding his family's ranch. But instead of killing it, he decides to take it back to the mountains of Mexico. With that crossing he begins an arduous and often dreamlike journey into a country where men meet ghosts and violence strikes as suddenly as heat lightning - a world where there is no order "save that which death has put there".

Cormac always paints with a honest, vivid, bare bones emotional brush
Revisado: 02-10-24
I listened to The Road, Blood Meridian, and now this. The stark world Cormac creates in his books leaves one at peace while oddly at the same time creating a sense of longing at what might have been. His heroes are always an everyman who endures the wrath of the fate hoisted upon them. The endure which such innate force that the strength in me cheers for them while the weakness in me weaps for them. The last few sentences echo in my heart. "The sun sets, as it does for every man, without distinction."

Not as good as Sapiens
Revisado: 09-21-22
I read tbis becuase I thought his other book, Sapiens, was so good. While Sapiens was full of things I never knew, Homo Deus was mostly full.of ideas I'd already encountered elsewhere. There are gems of ideas in this book, but it feels like I had to endure the rest of it to get them. If you are decently well read and comfortable with recent technological developments then this book is a waste of time.

I didn't like it
Revisado: 08-13-21
Let me preface my disdain for this book with: I exercise regularly, try to get 8 hours sleep, eat fairly healthy and don't overeat, I'm 40 years old and weigh about 15 pounds more then I did my senior high school when I wrestled varsity. This book irked me. It goes over a million things one needs to do to detox without iterating a concrete prioritized plan. It felt like semi emotional rambling on things one could do and leaves the reader confused on the most important things to do. Moreover the authors opinions seem to come from things he read about rather than tried to do himself. For example, he says to take as hot showers possible then as cold as possible, alternating this a few time. If you've ever tried this in a Colorado winter you know this is extremely hard to do. I am about 90% done with this book scratching my head as to what I should do because there was just so much things thrown out in this book. By the way, the author self admitdly was extremely out of shape and overweight when he started detoxing so take that for what it's worth ...if you are ready in good shape this book may seem overkill or confusing for your goals.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Revisado: 06-20-21
One of my top five favorite non-fiction books because it has so much practical advice on how to conduct yourself and perceive others in every single human interaction you have. The author clearly knows what he's talking about and communicate very simply and clearly. I have undergrad degrees in Psychology and Business from the University of Colorado but didn't know 95% of the stuff that was taught in this book.

Historia
The Earth teems with life: in its oceans, forests, skies, and cities. Yet there's a black hole at the heart of biology. We do not know why complex life is the way it is, or, for that matter, how life first began. In The Vital Question, award-winning author and biochemist Nick Lane radically reframes evolutionary history, putting forward a solution to conundrums that have puzzled generations of scientists.

How every form of life came to be
Revisado: 05-23-19
Fascinating. Awe inspiring. These are the words that come to mind when the author attempts to understand and explain the complexity, intricacy, and low probability of the first cell let alone complex eukaryotic life. This book takes you on a ride back to the dawn of the first cell, but goes where few other works dare go. The author theorizes how, under the constraints of chemistry and energy, life can start and evovle. A more "pure" scientist may critique that many of the ideas in this book are just that, ideas. However, I don't think that takes anything away from the beautiful tapestry this author has weaved and brought out from the dark recesses of human understanding for all to marvel at.
