Historia
It is the year 871, when England was Angle-Land. Of seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, five have fallen to the invading Vikings. No trait is more valued than loyalty, and no possession more precious than one's steel. Across this war-torn landscape travels 15-year-old Ceridwen, now thrust into the lives of the conquerors.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Sometimes, 21 hours can seem long, but this zoomed by!
But being a Dane myself, I struggled to bear the accent the narrator used for the Danes. It sounded more Jamaican than Scandinavian.

Historia
Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Great story - too bad about the French accent
Revisado: 02-20-16
Thoroughly enjoyed this book, but my overall listener experience was seriously compromised by a narrator who was unable to pronounce French, which the book is brimming with. Why oh why does the publisher not find a narrator who speaks the language in which a book is partially written?

Historia
Her marriage challenged by an insane, irresistible love affair, Julie decides to leave town and immerse herself in a new obsession: butchery. She finds her way to Fleischer's, a butcher shop where she buries herself in the details of food. She learns how to break down a side of beef and French a rack of ribs--tough, physical work that only sometimes distracts her from thoughts of afternoon trysts.

Just Awful
Revisado: 10-29-15
Would you try another book from Julie Powell and/or Julie Powell?
A memoir written by an unscrupulous, self-absorbed woman with no perspective on why she does what she does with her life or how her choices affect her family. Not even remotely interesting, just irritating and sad. I definitely wouldn't consider reading anything else by ms. Powell. Possibly by her husband, though. I'd be interested to know why on earth he apparently stayed with her.
