Historia
In the summer of 1995, at the largest Boy Scout camp in Ohio, a night of sexual violence ended with one counselor dead and another hospitalized. The death was ruled "accidental." It wouldn't be the last death associated with Seven Ranges Reservation. James Renner, too, was a counselor at Seven Ranges that year. He was always sure there must be more to the story of Mike Klingler's death, because Renner also knew firsthand that the 900-acre camp was not the safe getaway it was portrayed to be.

A disturbing story, skillfully handled
Revisado: 03-30-25
The author is a good narrator and it feels like he is talking directly to you. The book is structured in a way that gives the reader breathing time between upsetting passages. It is in part a memoir, and although his childhood was lacking Renner portrays his parents with compassion.

Historia
What is a “normal family,” and how do you go about making one? Chrysta Bilton’s magnetic, larger-than-life mother, Debra, yearned to have a child, but as a single gay woman in 1980s California, she had few options. Until one day, while getting her hair done in a Beverly Hills salon, she met a man and instantly knew he was the one she’d been looking for. Beautiful, athletic, artistic, and from a well-to-do family, Jeffrey Harrison appeared to be Debra’s ideal sperm donor.

Absorbing, literary memoir, best of the genre
Revisado: 07-20-22
Even without the jaw dropping hook of the 35++ siblings Chrysta Bilton has led a fascinating life. She writes about her parents, both brilliant and flawed people, without judgement. Indeed, she draws full 3 dimensional portraits of them. She writes about her tumultuous childhood without self pity.
I am 3/4 of the way through but interrupting my listen with other things so that I can savor living inside this book, and not devour it in one day. I couldn’t wait to share what a transporting and engaging listen or read this is. If allowed I would give more than 5 stars.
