This is a tale of friendship and sacrifice. I love the way Andy Weir sets up a survival premise so that the urgency is maintained throughout. I’ve read and re-read this several time simply for the pure enjoyment of it.

The tone is just too preachy for me. Interesting adventure in the “Walking Dead” genre, but the characters are just so oddly developed. The most mature one is the teenager in the group, while the two main characters act like patriarchal forces while denouncing that very patriarchy.

Sweet life lessons

This is a YA coming of age story whose entire plot is pretty much laid out in the summary of the book so no surprises there. The narrator’s insistence on sticking to his values despite his family’s bigotry is sad for him and heartwarming for humanity. Because it’s YA, the parents’ motives are not delved into deeply. Aside from the main character and his friends, most of the characters in the book appear to be stock caricatures of Central Valley farmers during WWII.

I’ve tried to like Adrian Savage, the mercurial frontman for Fugitive Summer, while serving as his band’s opening act on tour. We’re stuck together for three months, after all. And I’m well aware I’m lucky to be here. But it’s proved impossible. He’s far too rude and dismissive a guy to get along with. And way too good at getting under my skin. In fact, at this point, I think it’s fair to say I downright hate his guts.

This isn’t the whole story! What?!! The story drags along as the two characters can’t seem to get their act together purely so the author can turn this into a longer book. I was enjoying it thinking it would end in this book, but now I’m annoyed that I have to purchase another one for the ending! Totally not necessary.
