A trip into the abyss, chalked full of ghosts and gods and the American Promise. A Bad Trip that'll make you feel doomed, with a faint realization that you were never not doomed, that our frantic graspings of memory, and lofty innovations lead inexorably to the same dump sites as those who came before us. A journey that, while never reaching ground zero, walks around the perimeter enough to get the shape of the crater left behind by the blast. Words placed with rare effect and voiced in line with the intentions. A program that will stick with you like radioactive isotopes that have seeped into an underground well to infect the drinking water and that may be deadly to you but that also may give you a warm glow when you're alone at night, under the stars and giants, with a bottle of whiskey and a feeling that maybe you could see what it was all for in the first place. The Nuclear Uncanny both described and exemplified in 12 hours and 39 mins. Well, alright.

Can't say this was up my alley. I'm sure at the time it was written and for people who lived through the war, and for people who experienced Hemingway as he entered onto the scene, this book stood out as phenomenal. But having grown up long past the time that this book saw it's hay day, I have to say I found it kind of boring. I suppose I have no context in which to appreciate it, but, well, that is my experience.
That being said, I made it through this book. I absorbed a lot of really great moments that are scattered throughout it, and I came to a better understanding of what makes hemingway a great writer, but I would give most of the credit for this to narrator John Slattery, who made long conversations, or even longer description of day to day nothings enjoyable to listen to, simply because listening to him speak is so enjoyable. His easy going delivery, and charming characterizations, his skill in choosing which sentences were important and which to throw away, made this book for me. I will, perhaps, give it one more listen sometime down the road.

This one is hard to review as it's pretty classic and my opinions on the books themselves are basically pointless. So I will try to keep my review limited to the narrator's ability to tell the story. I give him 5 stars! His voices are fantastic! He has such a wide variety of characterization that each of the many characters stand out as individuals. His women are totally believable as female, and his children are too. I think he adds a level of humor that other narrators could miss, and during particularly dry sections, of which there are many throughout each book, he perfectly expresses the import of why the information is important to know to better understand the whole tale. Lastly, there is a lot of moments of wisdom, and also moments of darkness and melancholy, the sensitivity that the narrator brings to these moments is a key feature of his success, as it allows these moments to resonate in your heart, taking these books to a deeper level, and solidifying them as classics. So basically what I'm saying is, Neville Jason gets two thumbs up from this listener!

This was such a sweet story! I fell in love with Connor right away, I've often felt the pang of watching life from the outside too, and the self hatred and humiliation of shyness is an all too familiar feeling for me. When Jared steps onto the scene, I didn't know how I felt about him, until he started to show Connor his true self. A self that's so hidden from the world it makes Connor seem more like the brave one! I was very happy that Social Skills did not follow the usual formula of most romantic titles, the writing is so good, and the characters so real! I love Andrew Eiden as a narrator and I thought he did a great job with bringing the whole cast of characters to life, but especially Connor and Jared. Great listen!

I don't know what went wrong. I love the idea for this book, I'm a huge mythology fan, and the actors were all phenomenal! The production value was great and I read wonderful reviews for the story. And yet I got real bored about halfway through, I wasn't eagerly listening to find out what would happen next, I had no connection to the main characters dilemma so I just kind of lost interest in it all. Maybe it's just me. I was very excited to listen, so I might have set my expectations too high, or maybe the story just isn't that good....

I can see why they changed the story a bit when they made the movie adaption Point Break. Tapping the source has a few strange themes as well as a few twists and turns that seem to come out of nowhere.
That being said, this book is awesome! The setting (huntington beach) is so well laid out that you almost feel the sunshine tanning your skin and smell the salty air blowing in off the ocean while you listen. The characters, all lost souls in some way, are so strong and interesting that you can't help but like them even if they're the bad guys. Great Book!! Can't say enough about it!

Jaclyn Moriarty is a fantastic writer with a very unique voice. Everything about this book is a little peculiar in the best possible way. I found the world of Cello and the protagonist's mission to solve the mystery of his lost Father to be my favorite parts. But also very dear to me was the Sheriff of Bonfire!

Madeleine's story holds some of the funniest bits, considering the conversations between her two friends, and her letters back and forth between her and Elliott. But the mystery of Madeleine and her mother I found to be a little confusing. Very moving and well written but the mystery it's self is confusing and I think it isn't quite fully explained, though I suppose that's why it's Book 1!

The Narrators were all terrific! Andrew Eiden (Elliott) was an absolute awesome narrator, everytime I heard him start a chapter I knew it would be good. His portrayal of Elliott is spot on but more impressive was his ability to inhabit the old Sheriff Hector Samuels with the age and wisdom that's usually hard to get from a young narrator. Fiona Hardingham (Madeleine) was also fantastic. Her ability to bring feeling to even the smallest of sentences was great, it seemed like you could cry out loud or burst into laughter at any moment, and she rode that fine line delicately and consistently. Kate Reinders (The Princess sisters) was HI-Larious, and Peter McGowan (the travel guide voice) was perfect!

Wow, I didn't mean to go on for so long but as soon as I got started I couldn't stop! Loved this book and can't wait for Book II....
