Historia
“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

Some of King’s best work.
Revisado: 09-28-24
I was transported throughout the book to new worlds through each story. The novels, of Kings, I have read led me slowly into the story but I felt just as invested in the short stories as I am in one of his novels. He remains my favorite author.

Historia
Twenty-five years ago, during a celebratory weekend at historic Whitetail Lodge, Sarah McCaskill had a vision. When a young man was killed, her guilt over having ignored the warning devastated her. Her friendships fell apart as she worked to build a new life in a new city. But she never stopped loving Whitetail Lodge on the shores of Bitterroot Lake. Now that she's a young widow, her mother urges her to return to the lodge for healing. But when she arrives, she's greeted by an old friend - and by news of a murder that's clearly tied to that tragic day she'll never forget.

Slow moving
Revisado: 05-17-23
I found this story to be too slow moving for me. I almost did not finish but I listened to the last 2 chapters to find out who the killer was. The sad thing is I did not feel invested in the characters other than Sarah.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

My new favorite
Revisado: 09-30-22
I loved this story. My favorite part was the moral theme of helping others. I also liked how believable the situations were because King knows how to make such relatable dialog. The narrator did a great job too and held my attention.
