Historia
Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1676. Even before Mary Rowlandson was captured by Indians on a winter day of violence and terror, she sometimes found herself in conflict with her rigid Puritan community. Now, her home destroyed, her children lost to her, she has been sold into the service of a powerful woman tribal leader and made a pawn in the ongoing bloody struggle between English settlers and native people. Battling cold, hunger, and exhaustion, Mary witnesses harrowing brutality but also unexpected kindness.

Unrealistic
Revisado: 07-18-23
Mary is not a believable character as portrayed. She is more like a time traveler from today than a puritan woman.

Sy Montgomery's popular 2011 Orion magazine piece, "Deep Intellect", about her friendship with a sensitive, sweet-natured octopus named Athena and the grief she felt at her death, went viral, indicating the widespread fascination with these mysterious, almost alien-like creatures. Since then Sy has practiced true immersion journalism, from New England aquarium tanks to the reefs of French Polynesia and the Gulf of Mexico, pursuing these wild, solitary shape-shifters.

Enlightening!
Revisado: 12-22-22
This book is informative but not a text book. It’s a personal story of on science writer’s experiences with and about octopuses. I was afraid it would get too sappy, and admittedly I listened with less intent about most of the actual people friends (of her and of octopuses in general) she describes. But I was right there with her, feeling the pleasure of knowing individual animals, caring about how they are doing, mourning their loss. And it was good! I was always eager to turn it back on, always surprised that she still had more to teach us! I will never go scuba or snorkeling to see wild octopuses, but I feel like my mind has been there thanks to this author.

I loved the story but
Revisado: 09-12-22
I felt that the flitting around in time was cumbersome. I know we needed to go back and forth but it felt confusing sometimes. Especially in the first half. I’m also not sure that The characters are always believable.
Still, it’s a lovely story and I’m not sorry to have read it at all! The author paints a clear picture with her words, each setting described perfectly!

For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Eye opening book, well written and informative
Revisado: 01-11-22
I thought this would be full, dry and sleep inducing. I was happily wrong! It was an eye opening window into public health but told via focus on individual people.
I didn’t like the person reading the story. She put pauses where they didn’t belong, and inflections that made no sense. She could have used a practice run before recording. Her voice is fine, it’s just off-putting to hear it read in a way that feels like she wasn’t really paying attention.

Good book!
Revisado: 10-07-21
I enjoyed it except for the person reading it always sounded half asleep. It made everyone in the book sound dreamy and half there. She may have been trying to save her voice, but it was distracting.

Historia
Every object has a ghost. There is a small yellow backpack - half unzipped, mouth yawning to the pavement, contents strewn around it (a banana, an exercise book, a pair of scissors) - abandoned on a suburban footpath. Ten feet away, the rubber stamp of tyres, resisting clamped brakes, mount the curb and cut across the path. The tracks come to an end at a crippled stop sign. The street, a tree-lined suburban road dappled in late-afternoon sunlight, is calm. But anyone walking past can feel the ghosts: the prickle on the back of their necks that tells them something happened here.

I feel there is a lot of potential here
Revisado: 06-10-21
The basic story line is ok, the writing is good, the performance great. But so much was unbelievable. Especially the ten year old girl. Ten year olds don’t act like she did most of the story. She seemed more like a 6 year old! The mom isn’t too believable either. I just don’t buy a person with that job not seeing what was going on! Anyway, in spite of the good plot twists, I just didn’t like any of the characters.

This book surprised me in how much I enjoyed the mystery! My only annoyance with it was how everyone in it says “anyways”! One character, ok. All of them, that just took me out of the story every time.

It really turned me off how many apparent product placements were throughout this book.
Having said that, he did an excellent job of reproducing the feel of the old black and white thriller films!
