Historia
East Sussex, 1914. It is the end of England's brief Edwardian summer, and everyone agrees that the weather has never been so beautiful. Hugh Grange, down from his medical studies, is visiting his aunt Agatha, who lives with her husband in the small, idyllic coastal town of Rye. Agatha's husband works in the Foreign Office, and she is certain he will ensure that the recent saber rattling over the Balkans won't come to anything.

A favorite!
Revisado: 06-24-23
I have now read/listened to this 3 times. I loved returning to the well developed characters including that of the town of Rye. A beautifully written, historical novel.

Historia
The refreshingly original and “startlingly hopeful” (Lisa Taddeo) debut memoir of an over-achieving young lawyer who reluctantly agrees to group therapy and gets psychologically and emotionally naked in a room of six complete strangers - and finds human connection, and herself.

Disappointed
Revisado: 08-23-22
As an avid reader of various genre it takes a lot to keep me from finishing a book. This author’s style, including her significant oversharing of her group members private details did it. If you are looking for a tell all book then this is interesting, but beyond that this book disappoints. It’s unfortunate the reviews are not more balanced (that is part of the problem with Amazon reviews and marketing). In addition I found the readers tone and volume jarring. It left me feeling dysregulated rather than relaxed and wanting more listening.

There she discovers Yugiri, the only Japanese garden in Malaya, and its owner and creator, the enigmatic Aritomo, exiled former gardener of the emperor of Japan. Despite her hatred of the Japanese, Yun Ling seeks to engage Aritomo to create a garden in memory of her sister, who died in the camp.

A trip to Malaysia in my Mind
Revisado: 06-03-17
This book, beautifully written, brought me back to my own time in Malaysia and Singapore. I loved disappearing into it each day. The reading was well done and caught the accents from the region in a fair manner. However, I did find the book a bit long in places especially the earlier and middle chapters.

Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Fascinating if a bit long
Revisado: 03-03-17
I just loved this book and would have given it 5 stars but for its length. On the one hand the length was needed to unfold the story, on the other it made it slightly hard to follow in audible format since I couldn't easily flip back to heck names and characters and dates.

Historia
Frances Stroh's earliest memories are ones of great privilege: shopping trips to London and New York, lunches served by black-tied waiters at the Regency Hotel, and a house filled with precious antiques, which she was forbidden to touch. Established in Detroit in 1850, by 1984 the Stroh Brewing Company had become the largest private beer fortune in America and a brand emblematic of the American dream itself; while Stroh was coming of age, the Stroh family fortune was estimated to be worth $700 million.

Somewhat interesting
Revisado: 05-21-16
I chose this book based on another high review and I was disappointed. While I give the author credit for sharing candidly her life, both the good memories and the difficult, I found after awhile it seemed like whining (not necessarily all by her, but through her) without a point or plot. The writing was at times above average and at times forced; the outline flowing in places and messy or lost in others.
