The first book in the Ryan Kaine series was pretty good. That said, "On The Rocks" really crashed the series for me. It's centered around a pretty unbelievable premise that a killer, on the run as the most wanted man in England, hears of a kid he doesn't know who went missing on a school field trip less than 24 hours ago, so he drops everything (except his beloved Bergen backpack) to drive across the country to help. Did I mention his Bergen backpack? The story line of this book really just serves as a vehicle for talking about his backpack. It feels like a drinking game, but if you were to take a sip every time Gildart Jackson has to say "Bergen", you'd be dead by the third hour. I don't review a lot of books, and I've still got three hours left of this one, but I don't know if I'm going to make it at this rate. I don't know how many more Bergen mentions I can take.

I enjoyed the story overall. I (like many others) follow Scott Brick from series to series, which is how I found Richard Montanari. I'll probably listen to more of his work but I hit a pet peeve with The Rosary Girls. I get that no one can be an expert on all things, and I'm fine if you're not "into guns", but if you're going to write a book that involves them please have someone proof read your work. I want to get lost in the story, but hearing that the main character "cocked the hammer on her Glock" rips me right out of the story and ruins the experience.

Did Jonathan Marosz die or something? Stories are still great, although I get the feeling that Harlan Coben is running out of misadventure ideas for Myron. My problem is the narrating. After listening to the entire series, I really enjoyed the characters as brought to life by Marosz. Not only do I now struggle to know who is speaking, but I really hate their voices. Myron is ok, Wynn has lost his character, and the rest are worse. Much worse.

Speak this line out loud.

"Sniper specialists from Tennessee"

Now say it again but this time in your best Sylvester voice from Bugs Bunny and Tweety Bird.

Did you like that? Well get used to it because that's what you're going to hear for the next fifteen hours. I'm only an hour into this and I'm fighting not to turn it off. Worst narration I've heard from any book. I'm also not a fan of Hunter picking real people, using some of their bios, changing their names only slightly (I guess to avoid royalties or lawsuits), and making them characters in a fictional book. It's fiction, why name a fictional character "Carl Hitchcock" that obviously draws on the very real "Carlos Hathcock" and then butcher the man. I just don't get it.
