First, the narrator was pretty great, Sierra isn't a narrator I listen to often but she definitely improves a book with her performances. The premise of the story and characters start off very interesting, and the world as a whole has some cool, interesting tid bits to it. However, the story as the book goes along becomes inconsistent as do the characters personalities. The erotic parts are 80's porno, parody level at best and some laughably what the fuck phrases at worst.

Overall, I finished. I don't regret picking the book up and reading it. However, I'm not sure I will continue to the next, but I might try another of Neil's works in the future. Normally I would expect improvement from an author over time, but Neil has so many backs as it is, I think they are pretty set in their ways.

Story is just very slow and drawn out. If your selling a book as a cultivation book, you dont have to spend 3-4 chapters explaining what it is and how it works. The characters are very childish and immature in a very serious and mature setting. The clash just feel strange and makes everything hard to follow.

Really what killed it for me is all the exposition and no hook. I kept waiting for something to appear, whispers of a dark evil or something but the writer was to interested in explaining what cultivation is.

So the main flaw for me is the bad High Fantasy writing. So for one he gives the characters a weird dialects but most of it is just the occasional use of the words "arse" and "shite". The characters use those words A LOT, it is just very poor writing when you cant be bothered to pull out a Thesaurus or do research about dialects. The dialogue is very slow and hard to understand instead of actually causing you to immerse yourself more into the story.

The other big flaw is the characters just aren't interesting enough. It was hard if not impossible to get invested in them, I felt it was mostly due to a lack of any sort of personality. The MC is like 4 different characters in a single body, and it makes it hard to really get an understanding of who he is.

Lastly, what is up with the ending. I get the feeling he was to scared to just write a single book, and wanted to leave it open in case he could get more money by doing a full series.

The story drags way to long and very repetitive. The characters are just said. He is way to emotional, even if his wife had just died, he is supposed to be a hardened warrior. She is just ditzy and spoiled brat, she is supposed to be this intelligent girl but she comes off as air-headed. Also, the fact that they both freak out with just a brush of their fingers is a little over the top as well.

Out of all the Highlander books I've read, Colin Campbell is the least manly protagonist I've seen. The relationship felt rushed and it kind of made the rest of the book pointless.

The dialogue and writing in general just feels cheap. It is very over the top and could have been so much better. I'm glad a lot of people enjoy it but for me it just felt like a waste of time. There are a lot better written stories with similar elements out there.

You can try and change the words and pretend that its different but its not. Just another generic vampire romance book in the ever growing pile. I was hoping for some new characters or a different spin but nope.

Slow and predictable

The story is just so slow, bogged down in useless and repetitive information. By the time the story does move along, there isn’t really any anticipation left. A lot of the content and plot points and juvenile, things you expect from a Saturday morning cartoon or Kodomomuke. There are a few more mature moments but overall it’s a mixed bag.

I’m constantly thinking to my self “No duh” every time the MC has some genius thought. Definitely not a book you will think about later and need to reread to see if you missed somthing.

Narration was really great, some of the editing was a little off between the male and female voices causing overlap. Also, sometimes the tones of each voice didn’t match the tone of the overall conversation.

Soundbooth gets tackier

Soundbooth is turning into a very tacky group. It feels like there are 3-4 layers of sound going on and it just makes everything a mess. I used to love Jeff Hayes but his performance is being watered down by all the junk going on in the background. It is like listening to a cheap old fashioned radio show instead of an audiobook. Its hard to keep up with what is going on with the ear drum bursting sound affects and repetitive background music.

The story is just like you imagine, same cookie cutter used as all the other litRPG, harem, anime knock off books. There is even a Russian chick, how unique.

Writing is above high school level, characters are pretty weak and uninteresting, story wasn't the worst. Everything about this book is just bland, definitely have read better by writers on the same level.

The only good thing I can say about this is the story was kind of OK. The MC was a dick and that gets annoying really quickly. If he was just a dick that would be fine, but he just doesn't stop being a hypocritical idiot and that makes him predictable. There isn't really anything interesting about him.

I just have to mention how much I enjoyed the scene where Norman Bates gets mad at Jasmine and takes her into a creepy abandoned amusement part for a blind date. I'm just surprised she didn't run away and call the cops and end the book right then and there. She might be a bitch but he is creepy as hell.
