Open a book. Read a spell. Whoop, there he is... a demon. The last single friend in her group and tired of being stood up by her girls, a drunken Rayna turns to her first love, a book. After jokingly casting a spell her favorite character used to conjure a loving boyfriend, the results aren’t nearly as funny. Because the damn spell worked, just not in the way she thought it would! Now she has a brooding demon who she needs to sever the magical bond with if she ever wants to live a normal life again.

I came across this because I am a huge Kimberly Lemming fan. I appreciate that it takes a lot for anyone to put their work out for public consumption, but I think the comparisson to KL is more of an aspiration of the author rather than an accurate description.

Yikes on a bike
Revisado: 06-13-23
I feel like "retelling" is a very generous description, as there is no curse, he is more shifter than beast, there is no strong father/daughter bond, and the castle can be better compared to Howl's Moving Castle.
As far as the romance, it's non existent and I really hope that at least the print version of the book comes with an author's note that this should not be used as an instructive example for BDSM. This whole book is a recipe for how to induce subdrop and then there is absolutely no aftercare. This is a step by step manual on how play crosses the line into abuse. If you are curious about the lifestyle, please refer to other series such as The Arrangement or Fettered for your fictional introduction and instruction.
The whole thing was a miss for me. Voices were decent, characters themselves were annoying.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Overly Verbose
Revisado: 04-21-23
This was my first SK, and it will be my last. I couldn't get past the excessive comparisons to other stories along with the analysis of why the comparison was relevant. It absolutely killed the flow of the story, completely removed the need for my brain to engage and make those connections myself, and gave the impression that SK was Frankenstein-ing a story rather than creating his own. And was doing it on purpose. This feels like an awesome short story idea that the publisher forced into a novel...to the detriment of the story.
There is also a split identity for Charlie - his diction either sounds like a teenager, or like an 80 year old man. What 17 year old describes a pretty girl as having a "sashaying backside"? The flow between recounting a story from his youth and the immersion in the moment is also awkward.
I pushed myself to chapter 23 for the sake of my book club, but most of us were pretty bored and pissed and I decided I'm not wasting my time on this.
Narration was solid.

Not my thing
Revisado: 03-17-23
I love RH, and I was excited to try this series because it's not academy/high school, not bully, and harem of four or fewer men (which is astonishingly hard to find). I enjoyed the deviation from some expected plot points (the alpha power struggle was a little more nuanced than normal, the length of separation between characters, etc). This series had so much potential, and then went in a direction that I personally do not enjoy. When the plot starts to get too predictable, I need to be really invested in the characters to care about going on the predictable journey with them. Instead, we just kept getting more characters introduced. It's a move you can get away with in longer books/series when done correctly, but in this case just split my attention too much and became more of a distraction than an enrichment. There just isn't enough content for these characters to matter without forcing the issue, and I gave up a little over half way through.

better than expected
Revisado: 09-19-22
I somehow missed that this was a gay poly romance, but it hardly matters. The characters are absolutely amazing, and I LIVE for book best friends. The author did an amazing job of fully fleshing out each character's full personality and demonstrating the depth of friendships with side characters. The Nico/Wicky friendship is goals. Also the scene with Anh in Ikea is hilarious.
This is my first AJ Sherwood book and I will definitely be listening to more. The narration was great, although the sound mixing for Garen felt like it wasn't as clear as the others. Not the narrator's fault, that should have been caught by production. Solid performances!

Cringe-y Trope Execution
Revisado: 07-16-22
Pros: Chemistry, emotional maturity of characters, well developed cast of characters.
Cons: cringe-y execution of normally fun tropes, overly recycled plot, narrator didn't always get the emotional tone right.

Annoying FMC
Revisado: 06-26-22
Only got an hour in because the FMC still doesn't understand that having sex at work with another coworker is grounds for termination. Rather than owning her choices, even though they were not smart, she continues to play the victim. She talked him into it despite his multiple protests, so yes, it is her fault. And I am with her ex - I too, would not want to orgasm after being caught by my boss.
Instead of comedy, it's cringe.

Will is greater than her wit
Revisado: 05-21-22
Description of Jocelyn by Hollen. It's exceedingly accurate and why I am calling it at 11/19 hours. I am over half way through and she is still wilfully stupid. I love a good enemies to lovers, but Jocelyn is trying to return to a neglectful and emotionally abusive father and intended marriage that will probably see her dead. All to "save" her father, who screwed up her prospects with his own wilful stupidity. She claims it is for their people, but it's not like marrying this other dude will mean she will be around to keep him from doing another bone-headed stunt that would see them vulnerable again. Poor life choices are clearly a House Fury trait and I just can't anymore. Shane East did a good job, the rest of the world is interesting and the Dokiri characters are super compelling. Jocelyn is literally the only problem, but as a "too-stupid-to-live" brat, she is a BIG problem.

How it starts is not how it ends
Revisado: 04-24-21
I enjoy a good smutty book, but am always a little peeved when there's insta lust and the rest of the book is just sex with no plot. I definitely thought that was the route this book was going to take based on the first few chapters, but decided to hear it out based on the reviews. I am so glad I did because the plot is there and worth it and waiting to kill you a little bit.
In fact, the sex is almost a red herring. Its delightfully well written and purposefully comes before the intensity to keep you guessing and ends up making sense for the emotional states of the characters in a way insta-lust rarely does (barring PNR fated mates).
Narrators are delightful, despite my love/hate with Savannah Peachwood. She didn't sound perpetually on the verge of tears in this one, so I enjoyed ALL of the narration.

Historia
Two years ago, a split-second decision changed everything. I risked my life for a man I didn’t even know and nearly died for it. I’ve tried to forget him. To forget that whole night. But he hasn’t forgotten me. He’s been watching. Obsessing. Craving. And when he crashes back into my life like a wrecking ball, accompanied by two dark shadows — men he calls his brothers — the life I’ve been trying to rebuild for myself shatters into a thousand sharp-edged pieces. He believes our souls are bound by blood, and he’s come back to claim what’s his.

Gets interesting at the end
Revisado: 12-11-20
if you can get past the fact that the narrator mispronounces words and sounds constantly on the verge of tears, and if you can get past the inappropriate stalker behavior and overly broody but vague alpha male posturing, the last few chapters are interesting. took too long to get there, though.
