Historia
Unwanted and neglected from birth, Barbara Graham had to overcome the odds just to survive. Her beauty was both a blessing and a curse—offering her too many options of all the wrong kind. Her innate sensitivity left her vulnerable to the harsh realities of the street, where she was left to fend for herself before she reached double digits. Her record of petty crimes spoke to a life that constantly teetered on the brink of disaster. But in 1953, a catastrophic twist of fate would catapult her out of obscurity and into the headlines.

Lawyers perspective makes it riveting
Revisado: 04-16-25
Lawyers perspective makes it riveting. I can’t remember the case. I was ten at the time but living in the valley. I do recall the Carol Chessman case a few years later. That was in the early days of the death penalty debates. I have a hard time with the artificiality of courtroom proceedings. I guess it is true that out odd the best way we have of achieving justice. Having Marcia Clark narrated adds to the interest and makes the story real.

Historia
My life was ordinary until three years ago when I was thrown out of a downtown hotel window. My name is Robbie Brownlaw, and I am a homicide detective for the city of San Diego. I am 29 years old. I now have synesthesia, a neurological condition where your senses get mixed up. Sometimes when people talk to me, I see their voices as colored shapes provoked by the emotions of the speakers, not by the words themselves. I have what amounts to a primitive lie detector.

Historia
By all accounts, Carl and Roy Opgard are doing quite well for themselves. Or at least they’re doing as well as can be expected in a small town like Os. Carl manages the area’s swanky and successful spa and hotel, while Roy runs a nearby gas station and harbors grand plans to build it out into an entire amusement park, complete with a roller coaster. But when news breaks about a new highway to be built nearby, bypassing Os and leaving the town cutoff and isolated, it’s clear that something has to be done . . . even if the methods are bound to be dirty.

Historia
Merchants of Doubt has been praised—and attacked—around the world, for reasons easy to understand. This book tells, with “brutal clarity” (Huffington Post), the disquieting story of how a loose-knit group of high-level scientists and scientific advisers, with deep connections in politics and industry, ran effective campaigns to mislead the public and deny well-established scientific knowledge over four decades.

Thoughtful presentation of economic interests restraining public health advances.
Revisado: 04-03-25
Thoughtful presentation of economic interests restraining public health advances. Cigarette smoking, acid rain, the ozone hole, and climate change are all subject to being limited by public awareness. Unfortunately those who benefit economically from maintaining the status quo have worked hard to frighten the public about efforts to make things better. While thins are getting better we still have a long ways to go.
I’m sorry the impact of smoking on heart disease was only touched on tangentially. From my perspective that was the greatest social cost of smoking.

Historia
One L, Scott Turow's journal of his first year at law school and a best seller when it was first published in 1977, has gone on to become a virtual bible for prospective law students. Not only does it introduce with remarkable clarity the ideas and issues that are the stuff of legal education; it also brings alive the anxiety and competitiveness, with others and, even more, with oneself, that set the tone in this crucible of character building.

The first year of professional school is a molding and transformative experience.
Revisado: 03-23-25
The first year of professional school is a molding and transformative experience. As a physician (now retired)I couldn’t help comparing the first year of law school. I now realize that both are professional schools rather than traditional academic disciplines. Still one experiences them as a student and as a hopeful acolyte.
Perhaps one basic difference between law and medicine outs that the human body and knowledge about IT is the foundation of medical.
It appears that the search for justice and the best way to achieve it isn’t the foundation of law school. To my reading the foundation IS the importance of learning hope to secure and what it takes to win an argument. The hope it’s that truth and justice are on the side of winning arguments.
I enjoyed Turrow’s comments at the end of the audio.
While the first year of medical school was transformative, for me the truly transformative life changing event was internship - suddenly being responsible for people on a minute by minute level. That was life changing and also supported by colleagues in the care giving and learning environment.
Turrow’s special gift to the reader IS his ability to express things in a clear and captivating way.

The lawyers perspective on World War Two
Revisado: 03-19-25
An interesting perspective on World War Two. A lawyers perspective on being involved in World War Two. Pursuing and releasing a man accused of insubordination and of being a spy. Told from the perspective of a son reading a long hidden journal of his fathers. A passing acknowledgement by an American Jew of the wars discovery of butlers treatment of the Jews. More importantly it it’s a love story. The author reveals on an afterword that his father a physician, was a front line surgeon during the war.
