Three hours of a 16 hour book. Can’t believe I paid for this.
Revisado: 02-22-25
This is a severely abridged version cutting out 75% of the book. Get the full novel instead and skip this. They’ve cut so much that the characters’ actions don’t make sense. Any and all nuance is gone.

Less than what I expected
Revisado: 10-23-24
Shallow characters and a less than the usually exciting mystery for a Dick Francis novel. Disappointing. Difficult to care for any of the characters, even the protagonist, due to lack of depth. Since we don’t know enough about any of the character’s character or motive , it’s tough to care or be surprised by their behavior which lessens the impact of the resolution of the mystery. Odd too that no one really pays a big price for their treachery, very unlike the usual Francis way.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
My darling little boy Albie adores playing at our new neighbours’ house. And after the terrible year we’ve had, I feel so lucky that we can start over in this perfect place, with new friends who treat Albie like the son they never had. He can’t stop talking about the tree house they’re building him, and the cookies they bake together. But as time passes, something starts to feel wrong. Why don’t they ever open the front door more than a crack? They told me they had no children so who does the small pink tricycle I saw in their hall belong to?

Main character utterly unlikable - couldn’t finish
Revisado: 04-06-24
Main character is a bit unhinged but in a holier than thou way. All her preaching about doing the right thing while literally spying on others with binoculars eventually soured my desire to want to know the solution to the mystery. Don’t recommend.

Terrible. Can’t care about any character.
Revisado: 05-08-23
Main characters so unlivable that you can’t invest yourself in the outcome. Kept hoping it would get better but never did. 12 hour book and you’ll guess the killer in the first hour and spend the rest of the 11 hours trying to find a single character you can care about. What a waste of time.
