Historia
The creator of Deadwood and NYPD Blue reflects on his tumultuous life, driven by a nearly insatiable creative energy and a matching penchant for self-destruction. Life’s Work is a profound memoir from a brilliant mind taking stock as Alzheimer’s loosens his hold on his own past.

Historia
On April 12, 1862—one year to the day after Confederate guns opened on Fort Sumter and started the Civil War—a tall, mysterious smuggler and self-appointed Union spy named James J. Andrews and 19 infantry volunteers infiltrated Georgia and stole a steam engine called the General. Racing northward at speeds near 60 miles an hour, cutting telegraph lines, and destroying track along the way, Andrews planned to open East Tennessee to the Union army, cutting off men and materiel from the Confederate forces in Virginia.

Historia
Lawrence "Yogi" Berra was never supposed to become a major league ballplayer. That's what his immigrant father told him. That's what Branch Rickey told him, too—right to Berra's face, in fact. Even the lowly St. Louis Browns of his youth said he'd never make it in the big leagues. Yet baseball was his lifeblood. It was the only thing he ever cared about. Heck, it was the only thing he ever thought about.

Fascinating when I could understand the narrator's heavy brogue. It added character but subtracted some of the narrative even when replayed. Just too heavily accented for me to get.

A Prayer for Owen Meany

Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Unforgettable
Revisado: 12-05-15
What made the experience of listening to A Prayer for Owen Meany the most enjoyable?
The narrator's ability to personify the characters sosmoothly and individually made the story flow effortlessly. Owen's voice was unique but entirely believable to me. I want to share the sound of it with book club members who read, rather than listened to, the story. I think I will never forget Owen Meany as a person (!). What a gift.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Prayer for Owen Meany?
The account of Owen saving the children was poignant and shocking at the same time. the development of the story was so true to life it all its messiness and confoundedness. The VW prank description was worth the read all alone, but it's the spiritual quest and challenge in Owen's and John's lives that held me. I wish there were Owen Meanys in my world.
Have you listened to any of Joe Barrett’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Never have heard him before but now would like to know what else I can hear him narrate?
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not possible, but the fact that I listened in patches gave me time to mull over some of the events and consequences involved and I think helped me appreciate it all the more.. I couldn't wait to get to it each time.
Any additional comments?
How am I to get over my loss of Owen? I can't recall in my previous reading (and I've read a lot in my lifetime) a character that grabbed me so thoroughly. I feel like I've lost a friend. I suspect I'll be reading it again; wanting to hear once more Owen's take on things and the special character of his voice. " Faith and prayer," everyone! " Faith and prayer!" What a gem.

All that remained was charred masonry, broken timbers, and dried blood - a crude reminder of the home invasion and explosion that tore his family apart. McAvoy's wife and daughter are safe, he's been assured; he just wishes he knew where they were. As McAvoy wrestles with his guilt, self-hatred, and helplessness, trouble persists in stormy Hull.

Historia
One month in 1865 witnessed the frenzied fall of Richmond, a daring last-ditch Southern plan for guerrilla warfare, Lee's harrowing retreat, and then, Appomattox. It saw Lincoln's assassination just five days later and a near-successful plot to decapitate the Union government, followed by chaos and coup fears in the North, collapsed negotiations and continued bloodshed in the South, and finally, the start of national reconciliation.

Fascinating and well woven
Revisado: 06-29-15
Would you listen to April 1865 again? Why?
Would like to hear another narrator. Almost gave up too soon.
What was one of the most memorable moments of April 1865?
The several decisions made against defying the peace agreements by going rogue and keeping the country in turmoil. Agreement to honor the peace, especially by the Swamp Fox, helped stabilize the country at a critical time.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Unfortunately for me, the narrator seemed too inexpressive, too monotone, too professorial. I turned it off and moved to something else - several something elses - for quite a time. Once I committed to listening continually, I got so interested in the unfolding of events that I finished it, captivated by the amazing twists and turns of personalities and outcomes.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
You're not gonna believe this......
Any additional comments?
Too bad history is not taught like this in school. Maybe we'd learn something from it besides dates. This gives an appreciation for what it takes to overcome dissension and fix what's broken. If we survived this history, maybe we can survive the present day machinations if we can find enough people of good will in powerful places. I hope so.
