Historia
Frances and her husband, George, have two points of interest in Paris. One is an impromptu holiday to visit the Paris Exposition. The other is personal. George’s Aunt Julia has requested her nephew’s help in looking into the suspicious death of renowned artist Paul Ducasse. Though Julia is not entirely forthcoming about her reasons, she is clearly a woman mourning a lost love. At the exposition, swarming with tourists, tragedy casts a pall on the festivities. A footbridge collapses. Julia is among the casualties. However, she was not just another fateful victim.

As with the other books in the series, the characters are interesting and well fleshed out. The story’s ancillary characters are also varied and interesting.

Historia
Fall 1889: Lady Rotherton has arrived from London intent on chaperoning her niece Prudence through a New York social season to find a suitable husband. It's certainly not her niece's devilishly handsome partner in Hunter and MacKenzie Investigative Law. Aunt Gillian's eye for eligible suitors is surpassed only by her ability to discern genuine gems from nearly flawless fakes. At the Assembly Ball at Delmonico's, she effortlessly determines that the stones in the spectacular diamond waterfall necklace adorning the neck of the wife of banker William De Vries are fake.

Loose end

Story is complex and well crafted. I was disappointed that no attempt was made to wrap up Lena’s story. Other than that I enjoyed the book.

A good start to a fun series
Revisado: 08-12-21
This is the first book in a series. It’s a wonderful start with a relatable young woman at the lead. I’ve read all the books available in this series and have enjoyed them all.

Victorian adventuress Veronica Speedwell is whisked off to a remote island off the tip of Cornwall when her natural historian colleague Stoker's brother calls in a favor. On the pretext of wanting a companion to accompany him to Lord Malcolm Romilly's house party, Tiberius persuades Veronica to pose as his fiancée. But upon arriving, it becomes clear that the party is not as innocent as it had seemed. Every invited guest has a connection to Romilly's wife, Rosamund, who disappeared on her wedding day three years ago, and a dramatic dinner proves she is very much on her husband's mind.

Worst pick for a reade I have yet to hear
Revisado: 03-26-19
The performance is completed off for this series. I preordered this book and was looking forward to another fine listen. My disappointment was immediate. The performance in no way fit the characters Ms Raybourn has developed in her earlier installments.
