Not a worthy update to the original

On the bright side, it repeats parts of the original. Whatever the new authors have added in the update is politicized nonsense. Read the original!

I was a big fan of Seveneves by this author so I picked up this book. It seems the Stephenson has done an amazing amount of research on science of this turn of the 18th century and decided to write it all down and call it a novel. Very little story. No discernible character development.

The first 2 sections were fast-paced with lots of character development. Not a lighthearted read, though. =-) The third section was very heavy on architectural descriptions, so much so that I felt the need for images. The third part has less character development and a vaguer storyline but makes the reader interested in more novels about the diggers and pingers.

Interesting premise but ridiculously large plot holes. “College kids go to an alternate world and bring back gold to pay for their research and education.” How do you deposit gold in the bank? How do you explain a million dollars in gold to the IRS? Also, a portal to an alternate world that fits in your van and runs off a generator.

If you loved The Martian and Project Hail Mary like I did, you will be disappointed in these stories. Sherlock Holmes’ oeuvre did not need a dumber, duller, more violent update. The mysteries could be solved by any child who’s seen a season of CSI. There is no hero nor a compelling anti-hero. Re-read his novels instead.

A life-affirming book about death

Hadley shares some of the most impactful stories from her work as a hospice nurse and her own life. I’m not a crier but found myself in tears several times in listening, usually at the bitter sweetness of a moment. It is reassuring to read that so many people who are nearing death are greeted by loved ones who have gone before. On the other hand, the attitudes of hospital nurses and the inadequacies of health insurance are alarming. I am curious if the author has stories of work experiences that made her wonder if some patients were met at death by people they had harmed, rather than those they had loved.

The early chapters were very promising but why Is there an entire chapter about Darwin’s health problems when the punchline is no one will ever know the diagnosis and I has nothing to do with genes or DNA. Also, if there is any story of cruelty even tangentially related, he must discuss it in detail. An entire chapter on a human-chimp hybrid ends with ‘nope’. Why?

So much of what we’ve been taught about the beginning of life on Earth was mere speculation. There are new and intriguing hypotheses supported by fascinating research that made me exclaim “No way” in quiet public spaces. A warning, this book may make you like the Kreb cycle.

Kevin Hart's book is his biography. It has humor but if you are looking for his standup in book form, this isn't it. The book is very honest and, by the end, you get a feel for the man with a strong impression that much of Kevin's recent life was glossed over. Perhaps that will be his next book.

The author narrates this audio book and he is by far the least persuasive speaker I have heard on Audible. It actually made me laugh when the author was on the topic of using your voice to persuade others. The content is unoriginal and disappointing.
