Boring, flat characters.
Revisado: 08-10-23
It’s been a while since I’ve put a book on a DNF list. I tried so hard to enjoy this one but the characters feel so flat and uninspired. I couldn’t care less if they live or die and don’t care to listen to find out if they do or not. The narration is very flat and there’s not much tone difference between characters. As for the writing itself, it reads like a children’s book. Take a shot every time they use “said” instead of literally any other dialog descriptor. I’m glad that others have enjoyed this book but I was unfortunately not one of them. This book had potential, but was poorly executed.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old trans boy Benji is on the run from the cult that raised him—the fundamentalist sect that unleashed Armageddon and decimated the world’s population. Desperately, he searches for a place where the cult can’t get their hands on him, or more importantly, on the bioweapon they infected him with. But when cornered by monsters born from the destruction, Benji is rescued by a group of teens from the local Acheson LGBTQ+ Center, affectionately known as the ALC. The ALC’s leader, Nick, is gorgeous, autistic, and a deadly shot, and he knows Benji’s darkest secret.

Amazing
Revisado: 06-22-23
I am already looking forward to a second listen to this one. It captivated me and left me desperately searching for more and more and more. It captures topics of gender and religion in such a perfect way that’s it’s obvious it comes from a place of experience and isn’t just another novel marketed towards lgbt kids with a lot of overused tropes and stereotypes. This book is everything to me and I will definitely be buying a physical copy as well.

Poor Narration
Revisado: 05-16-23
While the story itself is really great and kept me interested throughout, the narrator does a horrible job of making me feel truly immersed. There’s monotone speech throughout, and the way he doesn’t even pretend to try to add any sort of musical lilt to his voice when reading lyrics makes the audio novel fall so short. When he simply read “la la la la la” out the way someone would read a list, I almost cackled.

Historia
Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the kingdom of Phthia to be raised in the shadow of King Peleus and his golden son, Achilles. “The best of all the Greeks”—strong, beautiful, and the child of a goddess—Achilles is everything the shamed Patroclus is not. Yet despite their differences, the boys become steadfast companions. Their bond deepens as they grow into young men and become skilled in the arts of war and medicine—much to the displeasure and the fury of Achilles’ mother, Thetis, a cruel sea goddess with a hatred of mortals.

poetic and beautiful
Revisado: 03-06-23
I've come back to this again and again and cannot get enough of it. It's written and narrated so beautifully. It's worth noting, though, that this is a romantic retelling of the Trojan War. It does bother me just a touch that Patroclus is made weaker / younger / more self conscious than his namesake from the source material, but this novel is so lovely and I love the way everything is weaved together.

Historia
In the woods where human lands meet fae, an ancient king born before the history of men finds a dying baby. Iohmar will take in the child and care for him until a suitable home in the human realm is found. But best laid plans often go awry in the lands of Látwill, where winds carry fae across the star-strewn sky, the woods ensnare the weak-minded with their sinister song, and even Iohmar, King Beneath the Earth, is susceptible to the will of the immortal mountains.

Absolutely loved this story and the family dynamics between Fae king and human son. The love and sacrifices one gives for their child. Loved it so much I also went and ordered a physical copy!
