Historia
On an ordinary Monday morning, Ariel Cafferty's phone buzzes with a disturbing text message. Something’s happened. I need to see you. Meet me under the candelabra tree ASAP. The words would be jarring from anyone, but the sender is the only man she ever loved. And it's been several years since she learned he died. Seeing Drew’s name pop up is heart-stopping. Ariel’s gut says it can’t be real. But she goes to the tree anyway. She has to. Nobody shows.

Sappy
Revisado: 12-02-24
I liked that it took place in Maine. Started out good but then turned into too much sappiness. Got very annoying.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Couldn’t finish
Revisado: 09-27-24
I don’t get how this book has so many positive reviews. So many historical inaccuracies and just inaccuracies. The huge peregrine falcon. Martha’s way too feminist attitude for the time period. Ugh. The “sex” scenes, Song of Solomon etc. I tried.. but I did find an actual great book about Martha Ballard, The Midwife’s Tale, Life of Martha Ballard, by Ulrich. Read that instead.

Historia
Drawing on the diaries of one woman in 18th-century Maine, this intimate history illuminates the medical practices, household economies, religious rivalries, and sexual mores of the New England frontier. Between 1785 and 1812, a midwife and healer named Martha Ballard kept a diary that recorded her arduous work (in 27 years she attended 816 births) as well as her domestic life in Hallowell, Maine.

Excellent book and recording
Revisado: 09-27-24
This is very well written and researched. I live in Maine so enjoyed the history of my local area. If you have any interest in history at all, you will enjoy this. I’m now planning on taking a trip to fort western! I learned of this book when I gave up on listening to the historical inaccuracies in the book the Frozen River. I was thinking to myself Martha Ballard, cannot be like this, or think this way. That book is utter clap trap. Thankfully someone mentioned this book. Her diary and the author’s writing really bring her character to life. A+++

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

The Narrator is awesome
Revisado: 04-03-24
Great narration! I can’t stand a southern accent but this guy’s voice and inflection made me forget that. He’s an awesome story teller. The story itself is fairly long. Some parts tend to drag on. The characters are all a sad lot. But the story moves quickly and definitely keeps you entertained! It’s a red neck soap opera. The moral of the story is drugs are bad. Yes, we all know that. One character does get a bit preachy at times.

Historia
For David Goggins, childhood was a nightmare--poverty, prejudice, and physical abuse colored his days and haunted his nights. But through self-discipline, mental toughness, and hard work, Goggins transformed himself from a depressed, overweight young man with no future into a US Armed Forces icon and one of the world's top endurance athletes. The only man in history to complete elite training as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and Air Force tactical air controller, he went on to set records in numerous endurance events.

He’s one tough Mother F*!^#
Revisado: 01-13-24
Overall I’m a type A personality. This book really spoke to me. While listening, I went for my longest run to date. He’s totally correct, we only live up to 40% of our potential. We can overcome anything and shouldn’t let messed up childhoods hinder us. Actually from all the biographies I’ve been reading lately, it seems a tough upbringing creates better humans overall. Great book Mr. Goggins.

He's a self-described beach bum who won his houseboat in a card game. He's also a knight errant who's wary of credit cards, retirement benefits, political parties, mortgages, and television. He only works when his cash runs out, and his rule is simple: he'll help you find whatever was taken from you, as long as he can keep half.

Sappy, pathetic women
Revisado: 01-12-23
Very entertaining, great story telling, beautifully descriptive. But the women…. They all want to sleep with him, they all come across almost a like with not much depth to them. The protagonist is obviously a a sexist guy, who likes to sleep around. I don’t have an issue with that, that’s his character. But it would have been nice if a least one woman would have rejected him.I did enjoy his philosophical musings on life.
