This is 2nd time I have listened to this book, probably a year apart. I have enjoyed it far more this time because the characters grew on me and I understood the precarious situation they were all in much better. The Count is a memorable and sympathetic character who is undaunted by the ugliness of the Soviet system that seeks to eradicate the world he grew up in. He never loses his belief in the superiority of the former ways and all of his actions are in accordance with that conviction. Reading this novel is an educational experience even if think you're familiar with the history of the period it takes place in. The Count's indomitable spirit is a testimony to the indomitable spirit of any free person who temporarily finds himself trapped in circumstances beyond his control and who refuses to surrender to hopelessness. I know I'll probably listen to this one every year from now on. And the narrator is outstanding.

Where to start? It's hard to believe that the same author of the David Wolfe series is the author of the boring Alli Falco series. These two stories might be more engaging with a different narrator... monotone delivery and unchanging pacing put me to sleep. I will not be listening to any more of these unless there's a new narrator.

I love historical fiction and this was a new author for me. I really enjoyed the story, but the reader was extremely annoying. I've never heard anyone read so jerkily and I ended up just enduring until it ended, despite being fascinated by the characters. He was good at accents but otherwise his narration was flat and without any smoothness in his presentation. I'd love to listen to her other books, but he's the narrator on all of them. Very disappointing.

ponderous is the only word to describe this narrator's delivery. No dramatization, barely any inflection, just plodding, slow and ponderous. I only finished it to get to the next book and the other narrator who really knows how to give life to the story and the characters.

I am constantly amazed by Ms. Peters' plots and themes and characters and how she weaves her moral wisdom into a complex tapestry.

I loved the early books that were full of new characters, new plots, wonderful scenery and surprising twists and turns. The last few have been tedious. George Guidall needs to retire. He can't even complete a sentence without taking a breath and his voices all sound the same. very disappointed.

I don't understand why this one is abridged and all the other Brother Cadfael stories are not. just because it's narrated Derek Jacobi, not Patrick Tull?

This book has O'Brian's best battle scene yet in the series. I constantly marvel at his imagination and plotting.
