The Badlands series of books and audiobooks are incredible
Revisado: 12-21-24
While I enjoy other Morgan Brice and Gail Z Martin books, this series is the one I always return to for re-reads and re-listens. One of the things that always draws me back is the relationship between Simon and Vic; one a medium, the other a cop. It’s solid - no angst between them. The ghost and murder plots, in each book, are what create the tension and excitement. I do enjoy the tie-ins to other books that the author writes but it’s not necessary to have read them in order to enjoy the Badlands series. Kale Williams, the amazing voice actor who brings these stories to life, adds even more dimension with the way he fleshes out the characters through his narrative. My hope is that Morgan Brice will continue to add new stories for Simon and Vic. I’ll happily keep purchasing every one.

I listened to Sons of Darkness and C.H.A.R.O.N. one right after the other. While Morgan Brice’s “Badlands” books are still my favorite series, I appreciated the crossover of characters from that and other Gail Z Martin series. Paranormal ghost and monster stories always hit the right note for me whether I’m reading them or listening to them. If you enjoyed this story you should check out another of Gail Z Martin’s series, “Wasteland Marshals”. While apocalyptic settings don’t normally appeal to me, I was reminded of Wasteland Marshals while listening to Sons of Darkness and C.H.A.R.O.N.

Shane Collins and Lucas Maddox are the last two US Marshals after a global cataclysm that destroyed most of modern civilization. They're still on the job, fighting the good fight, although they're no longer fully human and maybe not entirely sane. Witches and werewolves were not covered in their training as US Marshals. Then again, neither was the Apocalypse.

Very happy with this purchase
Revisado: 04-27-23
I enjoyed the stories when I read them but, as often happens, turning the books into an audiobook adds a different dimension that bumps the story(ies) up a notch. I was thrilled to find that the authors had decided to turn the first 3 Wasteland Marshals stories into an audiobook omnibus. I couldn’t use a Credit fast enough!
The first story builds the world of the dystopian future of earth and the relationship of the marshals; two men who’ve been best friends since childhood. I normally don’t enjoy dystopian stories but these work for me. There are some paranormal elements and enough good people to keep the tales from being dark and depressing. There is no romance, just 2 friends who have always been there for each other.

Historia
At 25 Hank owns a small parcel of land in Australia's rural southwest where he supplements his income from the property with seasonal shearing. Hank is a "shearing gun" - an ace shearer able to shear large numbers of sheep in a single day. His own father kicked him out when his sexuality was revealed, and since no one would ever hire a gay shearer, Hank has remained firmly closeted ever since. Elliot is the newbie doctor in town - city-born and somewhat shell-shocked from his transplant to the country.

Engaging story, good narration
Revisado: 01-02-22
Like other reviewers, I read this book several times prior to purchasing the audiobook. The story keeps my attention every time because it gives solid details about a lifestyle I’m slightly familiar with (ranching in a small set up) while adding a great deal of information I’m clueless about as I live in the U.S. Each time I read the book I think, “I didn’t know that about kangaroos!” What I’m trying to say, very clumsily, is that the tale goes beyond the relationship between the MCs.
Now that I’m re-listening to the audiobook, I’m even more drawn into Hank’s world. Of course I need the HEA, but it’s all the information that’s presented that keeps me coming back to the story, over and over. Thank you, Renae Kaye, for writing a story that goes far beyond a MM romance!

I know this will be a re-listen!
Revisado: 12-24-21
An unexpected mating bond, a demon who requires sex to survive, and a common soldier, make for an arresting story. The occasional touches of humor and the self-deprecating thoughts of the characters (who cannot seem to accept their intense need for one another) adds interest to the tale. I also appreciated the tender moments that incorporated warmth into their encounters, elevating them beyond simple, sexual need. And the epilogue finished the story beautifully (gotta love a confirmed HEA, right?).
The author has a definite talent for using descriptive language that draws you into every scene. Her skill with words weaves a very enjoyable story that was enhanced by the narrator. I find that a good narrator will always augment a well-written tale and this one was a real treat for my ears.

Good start to a new series-within-a-series
Revisado: 08-13-21
This story is a spin-off in the Morgan Brice/Gail Z Martin world of mediums, psychics, and immortal creatures. As I prefer to read and listen to MM stories I’m more familiar with the work the author does under her Morgan Brice pseudonym. In fact, her Badlands series (one of the characters of which is mentioned in this book) are some of my favorite audiobooks. While it can be listened to/read as a stand-alone, I would have been a bit lost in a few parts if I didn’t know the author’s other series. (Plus it’s always fun when you get to see old “friends” pop in.) John Solo’s voice acting is, once again, excellent. I did not read the book as I knew I would enjoy the audiobook with the life this narrator brings to a story.

Yes, this is an M/M story, but it is not flaming hot, it is more about the story. Ringo has been a character in my books since day one, and Bananas is the name of the drag queen restaurant in my books that Ringo owns. This book is about an awesome man who looks fabulous in drag, meeting a man who knows he is gay but has never admitted it to anyone, because he lives in a world that he believes will crucify him.

Great voice acting, decent story
Revisado: 08-01-21
This story illustrates the biggest reason I like audiobooks. The voice acting took a decent, shorter story and turned it into a heartfelt tale of two very different men who find their way to their HEA. While it happens quickly, the narration slows the time and makes it more plausible. Both voice actors are talented, but what impressed me the most was how well they voiced both main characters. This can be an issue with dual narration, where the actors use such different voices for the character the other is narrating. That was not a problem in this story and it made listening a true pleasure.
(Note that there are triggers in this book, including extreme homophobia.)

I’ve been living under storm clouds since my honorable discharge, but Julian’s the sun. I’ve tried everything to deal with my PTSD, but nothing seemed to help. So when my brother suggests a service dog, I figure I don’t have anything to lose. The last thing I expect is for the dog to come with a cheerful, quirky trainer I can’t get out of my head. I’m too screwed up for love, but a chance to explore a side of myself I didn’t realize existed until recently is too good to pass up.

This. This is why a true ‘voice actor’ makes the story even better
Revisado: 05-06-21
I haven’t even finished listening and already felt I needed to review this audiobook. When I read the story (through KU) I could tell that it would be even more amazing with a good voice actor. I watched and waited for the audiobook, saw the name of the narrator, and purchased it immediately. Nora Phoenix and K.M. Neuhold wrote a tale that tugs at your heartstrings, in the best of ways, and John Solo brought the story to life and tears to my eyes. Definitely will be adding this audiobook to my list of Favorites so I can quickly access it and listen again. Over and over. Superb job and a huge THANK YOU to the writers and narrator!

Morgan Brice and Kale Williams did it again!
Revisado: 04-14-21
The combination of Morgan’s wonderful “Badlands” stories and Kale’s narration is absolute perfection! Whenever I can’t find a new audiobook to listen to - when nothing sounds good - I know I can re-listen to any of these stories and find myself in Myrtle Beach, caught up in the lives of Simon and Vic. These books are some of the best psychic/ghost stories that you’ll find. One of the best things about this continuing series is that I can always count on the author to keep Simon and Vic’s relationship solid. They’re a team and work together beautifully. If you’re someone who likes relationship angst, you won’t find it here. These two men are adults and they love and treat each other that way. Combine all of this with the voice acting of Kale Williams - outstanding.

A good sampling of what books 1 & 2 will offer
Revisado: 02-14-21
I listened to this short story because I really enjoy this voice actor. I was quickly sucked into the story, then paid attention to the descriptions of the “clones” and the alien world wildlife. Going in, I knew this was a very short story and that the world-building would therefore be lacking. As this is book 0, and books 1 and 2 are also available on Audible (though not on Audible Plus) it would appear that this is a 40 minute sample of what you can expect from the books themselves. I was intrigued by this short beginning, so I’d have to say that this technique was effective. 👍
