Historia
My little girl’s room is dark. Her bed is empty. I turn on her unicorn nightlight and bury my face in her pillow, my heart breaking. I know who did this. His name is Samuel Barlow. He has pale sallow skin and red-rimmed icy-blue eyes. But no one will listen. As darkness falls and rain lashes against the window, there’s a knock at my door and I open it to see those same eyes staring back at me. It’s his mother and she says she can help me find my daughter.

Plot twists I never saw coming
Revisado: 12-10-24
I'm pretty good at guessing plot twists, but this book makes me doubt my abilities. I loved being taken by surprise. Also, the narration in this audiobook is excellent.

Historia
In this barren home, siblings Conner, Rob, Palmer and Violet daily carve out a future. They live in the shadow of their father and oldest sister, Vic, two of the greatest sand divers ever to comb the desert’s depths. But these branches of their family tree are long gone, disappeared into the wastes beyond, leaving the younger siblings scratching in the dust, hopeful for a better life. On the other side of No Man’s Land, Anya was born beside the abundant mines knowing her prospects would be to marry, have a family, and work in ore, in service to the Empire of the East.

Best in the two part series
Revisado: 11-23-24
The characters in this 2nd book of the series have more depth. Every character has an interesting story. The story in book two is also much more immersive than the first book.

Wonderful audiobook, but I kept getting distracted
Revisado: 10-17-24
The audiobook's narrator, Fiona Shaw, did a masterful job. She used her acting skills to portray each character (and their accents). Her delivery is emotional, defiant, sorrowful, and whimsical - so much so that I was completely immersed to the point of distraction from the actual story. I replayed chapters so that I could focus on the story, but that's completely fine by me! The story is very well-written, making this audiobook one of the favorites in my library.

Historia
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Unexpected story from Robert Dugoni
Revisado: 08-24-24
This audiobook really surprised me. It's a great departure from Dugoni's usual stories of intrigue and murder mystery. But it's more than that. This book is a unique coming of age story with a diverse cast of characters - some of whom have unexpected arcs, while others you might think are ready to redeem themselves, only to find out that they're still frozen in the past. Robert Dugoni narrated this audiobook, which made me believe this story might be a personal one in many ways. I loved this story and how it was told.

Historia
Jack Diller is just one more struggling actor on the road to nowhere. He’s got an agent who barely remembers his name, his ex-girlfriend has hooked up with a Silicon Valley dude, and the milk in his fridge is so far past its sell-by date it’s historic. The only way Jack can scrape together a bare existence is by delivering food to exactly the types of successful people he wishes he could be. Then, one day, a very strange audiobook shows up on his phone.

Great performances and captivating story
Revisado: 06-21-24
I've gotten tired of many performed podcasts because they use too many distracting sound effects. This one, however, strikes a perfect balance - the story is enhanced by the sound effects. The acting is very good as well.

I've always known Zachary Quinto as a serious actor who plays villains. I'm so pleased to hear him do comedy - and he's hilarious! The whole cast is funny and the writing is so good.

James Patterson leads you into the darkest recesses of the mind with this chilling, immersive audio thriller. We meet Brent Quill, a frustrated actor trying to take his game to the next level. When he learns about the intensive Method acting process, he dives in deep—and immediately lands the lead role in a TV series about a brutal serial killer. But when the Method’s controversial techniques start to take over Brent’s psyche, the lines between real life and acting begin to blur dangerously. How far will Brent go to “become” the character?

Story is predictable and weak
Revisado: 10-23-22
The only reason I didn't give this one star is because Zachary Quinto is so good despite the material. The sophomoric story and two dimensional characters had me quit the story about three quarters through. The investigator and ex law-enforcement characters are just so unbelievably stupid (you seriously needed to see a sketch to figure that out)? The "method" instructor is so cartoonish, he could have been the bowling instructor on the Simpsons (feel the floor underneath your feet, Marge).

It's a blindingly hot summer. International visitors surge into Sydney's Darling Harbour. Two-year-old Tommy is sailing his toy boat in the park there with his mother Phoebe. Tommy vanishes into thin air. The following winter, taunting notes written as nursery rhymes begin arriving at his parents' home. Little Boy Blue, where did you go? Who led you away? Only I know.

Anni Taylor is never predictable
Revisado: 10-06-22
I'm usually good at figuring out perpetrators. This is the second book I've listened to by Anni Taylor, and I've gotten it wrong both times. Her books are addictive, because the twists are so unexpected. In this book, I could relate to the main character, with her insecurities about motherhood and her sense of self.

Historia
Miracle and Wonder: Conversations with Paul Simon is part memoir, part investigation, and unlike any creative portrait you’ve ever heard before. Recorded over a series of 30 hours of conversation between Simon, Gladwell, and Gladwell’s oldest friend and co-writer, journalist and Broken Record podcast co-host Bruce Headlam, the conversation flows from Simon’s music, to his childhood in Queens, NY, to his frequent collaborators including Art Garfunkel and the nature of creativity itself.

Revisado: 02-25-22
This is such a beautiful tribute to Paul Simon. The conversations with him and many others who were moved by his music made me go back to every song and listen to its entirety. Roseanne Cash's recollection of playing the song, The Only Living Boy in New York, to her two year old son brought me to tears.
