An entertaining examination of shortcuts

I've read several nonfiction books that deal with math in everyday life and specific situations and this one takes an interesting tack - it comes from the perspective of humanity's need to find the most straightforward and efficient way to an answer. In both math and in other aspects of life. (e.g. our use of language is a type of shortcut). Perhaps not the most riveting math book I've read, but one that covers a lot of intriguing ground.

The reader for this is absolutely fantastic.

Odd Thomas is a great story for one primary reason... Odd Thomas is a great character. The novel is told through his first-person perspective and I found it to be one of the most effective uses if this POV I've experienced in a while.

The narrative shines from the start as Odd explains his gift and got it affects his life in the small California town he inhabits. Many characters he meets are absurd and distinguished - which is quite characteristic of Koontz.

There are some detours as Odd and the audience make their way to the climax which is more than hinted at from the first few chapters. I had a feeling where the story might be going, but I feel going the end - especially the last three chapters, particularly devastating.

Now to see if the movie adaptation is anywhere near as good.

I was impressed by this novel and the way that the story unfurled. From the beginning the author offered a terrifying hook and things only got worse from there. Both sets of villains - worms and child alike - were chill-inducing. Also a great performance on the Audiobook.

The best part about this book is the description of studies that were designed to address how identity and stereotypes played in certain situations. This is especially pertinent considering the events of 2016 and beyond.

Basically everything about this audiobook experience - from the performance by the author - to the marvelous researched content was perfect. I was sad to hear it end.

Wow, there's definitely some food for thought here. I'm generally a believer in this kind of stuff but some of these stories are just jaw-dropping and I wonder how much is true. Regardless, I'm so glad there were people like the Warrens helping people. They might disagree but they're real life heroes!

Frankly, I dived into this book wanting a better understanding of why many Americans don't want to listen to experts with regard to COVID-19. This book was published before the pandemic struck but the book ends with a prescient warning concerning America and many who would embrace anti-intellectualism... That it will take a momentous disaster the likes of Coronavirus to get us to change our ways.

It remains to be seen whether that warning was fully taken heed.

I feel there's a lot of projects that proclaim that the GOP/Republicans are on the verge of extinction but then that never happens and conservatives continue to triumph politically. But Mr. Greenberg makes a somewhat convincing argument that this will actually come to pass in the major elections in 2020... That is supposedly even a confluence of events and demographics will result in a Republican route... And this book lead published before the Coronavirus epidemic so we'll see how that turns out. I'd love to see an addendum to this book describing the potential electoral impacts of the pandemic.

I love reading Box Office figures every weekend. It's because I love movies and box office determines what movies we ultimately see... This book - appropriately - presents the big picture of where cinema is heading as we enter the 2020s. It's a little sad but also full of potential depending of what the audience writ large decides they want to see.
