Really very well done story with a totally plausible plot that keeps you guessing to the very end. Perhaps my favorite of the mystery books written by Sophie Hannah.

I’ll admit this is one of my favorite movies. I delayed reading the book. But now I am so glad that I did. It helps clarify the movie and honestly the book made me cry too. Masterfully written and presented.

Covers some new ground with a new perspective. He is on to something about the three pieces of glass.

A really excellent award-winning movie (which I’ve watched several times) is based on an even better original book by the same title. Both are based on the true real-life story of Hugh Glass. Hugh survived a ship wreck, a pirate kidnapping, a 1000 mile walk across Texas and then being taken by Indians. So by the time the grizzly bear attacked him he had already survived a lot. But his story about revenge is a fantastic wilderness adventure. I couldn’t put it down. I read the book in one weekend, it was that good. It is different from the movie but frankly, that is a good thing.

This was just about the biggest nothing burger of a story I’ve read in a long time. That is 16 hours of my life I’ll never get back. I kept waiting for it to get better. The writing was maybe high school level quality. This is obviously an example of a book that author put together to meet a publishers deadline. A master storyteller could tell this same story better in about half the pages.

For decades I have said that Mark Twain and Charles Dickens are my favorite authors. I am now adding a third author. I have Ivan Doig. I am a sucker for historical fiction. And theses three books that make up this trilogy are among the best I have ever read. Humor, intrigue, fully developed characters, a tremendous use of language, set around the historical west in Montana, these books are hard to put down. This last month has been made better by the journey I was taken on by reading The Whistling Season, Work Song and Sweet Thunder.

Easily one of the top five best books I’ve read in my entire life, which now exceeds 50 years. The use of language, the development of characters, and just the telling of a magnificent story make this a memorable book.
