WOW! Read this!
Revisado: 02-24-25
I tripped over this title accidentally and what a stroke of luck. Be prepared to be drawn into a mesmerizing, complicated, poignant, sad, happy, mysterious, romantic, well everything book!
The story weaves between two timelines, and it works. The stories from the two eras are full of similarities and contrasts. The female characters are better developed than the males, but it's not a huge problem. The conclusion perfect!

Wonderful!
Revisado: 09-29-24
He has done it again! I was dubious at first with all the glitzy show biz part of the story but Steve is so wonderfully down to earth, and the main characters so engaging that I got swept along. Before I knew it I was hooked, then I didn’t want it to end. What a master stroke having Nicola Walker narrate - brilliant performance, bravo!

Historia
Aging Rock God Jim Sullivan is heading for the quiet life on his tiny newly acquired island, off the coast of Cornwall. That is until he sends a letter to the King of England, announcing his intent to declare independence from the UK and appointing himself king. Determined not to cede one inch of British territory, the UK government dispatches low-level Foreign Office researcher John Cabot to put a stop to Sullivan's ambitions. What they didn't anticipate was Cabot's tenacity for unearthing information they'd rather he didn't, or Sullivan's relentless optimism in his own ideas.

A wry and wonderful trip into the machinations of government and a hilarious tribute to rock gods!
Revisado: 08-30-24
From the buttoned world of Whitehall to the trickiness of Cornish landlords this was a fun ride! Read it, enjoy it - but you will be left wishing the book not finished …. I could happily listen to how the Kingdom of Scanlon’s Rock navigates itself through the EU and NATO - fertile ground for a sequel there!

Murdering an English accent
Revisado: 12-02-20
Why, oh why use an American actor to narrate a book set in England with predominantly English characters? The story was interesting but I was distracted by the awful accent. We have many fabulous native English actors who would have read this so much better. I am sure Mr Cooper reads beautifully when using his own American English-but the Queen’s English - no. It spoiled my listening experience.

This series just keeps getting better!
Revisado: 11-11-20
I have read all the books in this series and Louise Penny weaves such wonderful dramas every time, this may be her best ever!
I will not make specific comments on the plot or storylines because I believe this could ruin the reading experience. However, in this latest visit with famille Gamache she has crafted a mystery taut with tension, showing us a brutal and soulless side of humanity. At the same time she takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster, with tender moments, and haunting moments allowing us to better understand the complexity of Armand’s family. Above all as we navigate through this complex plot - often gasping at the twists and turns - she reminds us of the beauty possible in the human spirit and family love.

Historia
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?
