Historia
Four days before Christmas in 1943, a badly damaged American bomber struggled to fly over wartime Germany. At its controls was a 21-year-old pilot. Half his crew lay wounded or dead. It was their first mission. Suddenly a sleek, dark shape pulled up on the bomber’s tail - a German Messerschmitt fighter. Worse, the German pilot was an ace, a man able to destroy the American bomber with the squeeze of a trigger.

It’s been decades since I first came in contact with this book. It was meaningful then, perhaps more so now.

Good HR criticism - wrong alternative solutions

One of the best books on company culture that I have read
Revisado: 01-08-19
I’m grateful for this honest behind-the-scenes tour of what seems to be a secret of much of Netflix’s success. Patty does an excellent job of narrating, making it infinitely more accessible and down to earth than I would’ve expected. It’s a groundbreaking work on what workplace culture can and should become. At once hopeful and grounded and honest. In fact, the stories of the failures, not merely the successes makes it even more hopeful. It has deeply impacted my management style, forever debunking the correlation between building a successful workplace and the race for more and better perks. I’m grateful to have shared in and personally grown from this experience.
This book is much bigger than even the name implies. Thank you for sharing your important story.

A refreshing jaunt through the woods

What a delightful little find. It captured the essence of the Poo I loved as a child; a remarkably unassuming, Poo, a courageous and insightful Poo, and a guide back to the me that I want to be Poo. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Historia
In Friend and Foe, researchers Galinsky and Schweitzer explain why this debate misses the mark. Rather than being hardwired to compete or cooperate, humans have evolved to do both. It is only by learning how to strike the right balance between these two forces that we can improve our long-term relationships and get more of what we want.

Unexpected
Revisado: 01-05-16
My initial impression of this book is that it was weird. What I mean is that it's not exactly the book I was expecting to read. I had purchased the book looking for a refresher in negotiation. This book did eventually deliver that -- along with insights I'd not heard anywhere else -- but it took an unexpected path to get there, which made for an interesting journey.
The scope of this book is bigger than I expected. It took me a while to get in step with where they were going. This had more to do with my expectations than anything else. But the path they led me down was profitable. Negotiation is a big topic. Bigger still are the dynamics of trust. This book set negotiations on the backdrop of human interaction better than any I've experienced. There are several concepts that are worth the effort to purposeful application.
My current field of study is how to cultivate and curate intrinsic motivation within organizations and systems. The research on the negative and positive ramifications of empowerment in different social structures alone will get this book another listen from me.

The material was well prepared and clearly delineated between what was opinion and what had a deeper basis in clinical research. I'm walking away from this with some very actionable steps and insights.
Alan Alda's was polished and engaging. Well done.

The new question: Ten years after the worldwide bestseller Good to Great, Jim Collins returns to ask: Why do some companies thrive in uncertainty, even chaos, and others do not? In Great by Choice, Collins and his colleague, Morten T. Hansen, enumerate the principles for building a truly great enterprise in unpredictable, tumultuous, and fast-moving times. The new study: Great by Choice distinguishes itself from Collins’s prior work by its focus on the type of unstable environments faced by leaders today.

Revolutionary for my business
Revisado: 01-22-15
Hansen and Collins endeavored to answer a truly great question: Why some companies thrive in uncertainty and others do not. The resulting book has proven revolutionary for me. This study is as worthy an investment as any other project Jim Collins has done. I appreciate the rigorous, data-driven approach that is his calling card, and I marvel at their respective teams' ability to turn mountains of data into simple, actionable concepts. I'm a fan.
By nature, I'm a seat-of-the-pants creative type. Anything that could excite me this much about becoming a more disciplined leader is truly a remarkable achievement. They have challenged me to a dramatic & necessary shift which will serve me the rest of my life.
