Stellar narrator and fun, creative story!
Revisado: 12-24-24
Porter is a wonderful actor with brilliant voices and a charming main character—which is a big plus because the main character could easily have been super annoying. Story is creative, fun, and so thought-provoking. No wonder this series has been so popular! Also worth noting that the main character’s background is software engineer—like the author’s. Makes the story more believable.

Historia
Les Misérables is set in Paris after the French Revolution. In the sewers and backstreets, we encounter "the wolf-like tread of crime", and assassination for a few sous is all in a day's work. We weep with the unlucky and heart-broken Fantine, and we exult with the heroic revolutionaries of the barricades; but above all we thrill to the steadfast courage and nobility of soul of ex-convict Jean Valjean, always in danger from the relentless pursuit of the diabolical Inspector Javert.

Like story time with Professor Dumbledore
Revisado: 09-07-24
At 67 hours, this wonderful classic could easily be a slog even with a decent narrator, but Bill Homewood is such a fine actor you can visualize every moment and every character. (Highly recommend his narration of The Count of Monte Cristo too.) I listen to most books at 2x speed but am listening to this one at the full 67 hours because it’s such a pleasure.

Historia
Slough House is a dumping ground for British intelligence agents who've screwed up cases in any number of ways - by leaving a secret file on a train or blowing a surveillance. River Cartwright, one such "slow horse", is bitter about his failure and about his tedious assignment transcribing cell phone conversations. When a young man is abducted and his kidnappers threaten to broadcast his beheading live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem himself.

Enjoyed all of them, Crouch’s most and the first story the least. So if it doesn’t grip you right away, keep going. Each is quite different from the other. Excellent narration across the board.

I wasn’t familiar with the story and had so much fun listening to this book. Wonderful narrator. The story is pretty simple, focused on love and honor, only 9 characters. It breezes by and leaves you warm and fuzzy.

Bill Homewood is my new favorite narrator
Revisado: 07-18-23
THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO is dark, fascinating, disturbing, and fun. If you enjoy Victorian adventure stories, you’ll probably love it. You already know to expect sexism, racism, and elitism. You’ll find a big dose of Orientalism here too. But I felt Dumas was making fun of those perspectives even if he couldn’t entirely separate himself from them. Honor figures prominently throughout, even as the hero becomes an anti-hero. Juicy villains abound.
It took me a little while to get used to Bill Homewood’s narration, because his female voices don’t sound feminine at all and some the accents seemed over the top. But I appreciated him more and more as I listened. Bill Homewood is a wonderful actor and his passion makes the 68 hour experience truly delightful. I’m looking forward to listening to the other classics he narrates.

Artful, Deep, and Difficult
Revisado: 05-26-23
Read this upon the recommendation of my daughter—it is her favorite book ever assigned in any English class. I loved the concept and the poetic nature of the history telling, but the narrator is quite stoic. Wish I could have heard the stories read with more feeling. Nonetheless, it is excellent. Very creative, and leaves you with a tremendous amount of food for thought.
Whatever you might assume about this book, it is probably more nuanced than that.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

The low reviewers didn’t finish it
Revisado: 04-27-23
This book is promising at the beginning, slows for a while in the middle, and leaps up at the end. If you bail, it definitely won’t be satisfying. Disregard any realism-related critiques—you know when the octopus starts talking that this is not a realistic story. The book felt to me like a poem, with melancholy, healing, and a little bit of magic. This wasn’t my usual genre (I’m just an octopus fan) but it touched me and I’m glad I listened.

Historia
In the highly anticipated finale to the New York Times best-selling trilogy, dictators, prophets, and tensions rise. In a world that’s conquered death, will humanity finally be torn asunder by the immortal beings it created? Citra and Rowan have disappeared. Endura is gone. It seems like nothing stands between Scythe Goddard and absolute dominion over the world scythedom. With the silence of the Thunderhead and the reverberations of the Great Resonance still shaking the earth to its core, the question remains: Is there anyone left who can stop him?

Brace yourself for something big
Revisado: 04-11-23
The scope is far beyond the scope of the earlier books. Just be ready that the characters seem less important than the arc of history and the philosophical questions it explores. I liked how the ending tied so many threads together. Was my favorite book of tte series. The most interesting new character was non-binary, and I wished we could have heard what they were thinking.
