Historia
The Years is a personal narrative of the period of 1941 to 2006 told through the lens of memory, impressions past and present - even projections into the future - photos, books, songs, radio, television, and decades of advertising and headlines, contrasted with intimate conflicts and written notes from six decades of diaries. Local dialect, words of the time, slogans, brands, and names for ever-proliferating objects are given a voice here. The voice we recognize as the author's continually dissolves and re-emerges.

I felt as if I walked beside her through her life
Revisado: 12-29-22
Ernaux’s elegant writing style makes this more than a walk down memory lane for a person such as I who was born in the same year. Her lucid observations and evaluative commentary allow you into the room/world with her. Highly enjoyable.

Historia
In medical school, Paul Farmer found his life’s calling: to cure infectious diseases and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to those who need them most. Tracy Kidder’s magnificent account shows how one person can make a difference in solving global health problems through a clear-eyed understanding of the interaction of politics, wealth, social systems, and disease. Profound, Mountains Beyond Mountains takes us from Harvard to Haiti, Peru, Cuba, and Russia as Farmer changes people’s minds through his dedication to the philosophy that “the only real nation is humanity.”

Compelling story beautifully written and read
Revisado: 04-23-22
The admirable accomplishments of Paul Farmer make him a giant in the field of international healthcare. And beyond that, his unstinting empathy for the world’s poor combined with his genius, courage and commitment have left us with a vision of what can be achieved if we but have the will. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Tracy Kidder is a brilliant story teller who captures the drama of Paul Farmer’s improbable beginnings through his stellar academic life and evolving commitment to helping the poorest of the poor in Haiti. Paul Michael gives an engaging narration that never lags, beautifully realized. This should be required reading for everyone!

Abominable narration
Revisado: 02-13-22
Though I sampled this book before buying it, I hadn’t fully realized how the pretentiousness of the narrator would squeeze every ounce of joy out of the poetry. The reader is a self-satire. Remember Percy Dovetoncils, the poet created by Ernie Kovacs; now that was fun and funny, but Bart Wolffe isn’t playing for laughs. He seems to think he’s giving the poems a highbrow interpretation with his exaggerated pronunciation. I can imagine him being on a 19th Chautauqua circuit bringing culture to the hinterlands. A new recording should be made by a reader who truly understands and appreciates the poetry.
