Not bad but not great

The author describes current trends and suggests that they will continue, but generally fails to give examples of the consequences of the broad predictions. He also spends a truly excessive amount of time on criticism of traditional religions. There are at least some insights that I found useful, but most of the book could be cut with no loss. If you have a credit to burn and are looking for something similar, The Modern Mercenary or anything by Zeihan would be a lot higher on my recommendation list.

I am two books into the series, and I'm just shocked that this has not blown up. Great writing, good story, character development, action, and a very original idea. if you only read one urban fantasy series, I suggest it's this one.

An enjoyable short story

I have not listened to the entire series this far, only the novella. I very much enjoyed it and hope to enjoy the series as much, should it be as well written. Being a light in the darkness is old symbolism, but I've never seen it taken this literally.

Short an sweet

If you enjoyed Spellmonger up until this point, you will enjoy this book. Personally, I enjoyed the story from Dara's perspective the most. With the hawk maiden trilogy being over, there is not likely to be a lot more written from her point of view.

Very good, and a product of its time

Robert Heinlein was a science fiction author who lived during the 1970's, and the sexual revolution. In much of his work he draws a forward linear trend, and makes predictions about human sexuality that seemed plausible at the time, but now seem absurd. While this is a work of fantasy, it is a story about other peoples in distant worlds and their different cultures. In many cases it is intentionally shocking and offensive. That is kind of the point.

Good companion to the series

While I enjoyed all of this, none of it is really nessissary to understand what is happening in the overall story of the series. Also there were some serious changes to, "Checkered Past," from the version at the end of the kindle version of Enchanter.

Terry's best work yet, this book is the culmination of story threads that have Ben building since the first book and sets up story for the next several books. If you don't like the price than just use a credit. Seriously do not wait on this one.

A bit of a copy but an improvement

This is probably the fourth book I have read with a primace of an apocalypse where the world becomes like a video game. Personally this is my favorite. The writing is good but the thing that sets it apart is the production quality. Full cast with sound design. There is dramatic background music during fights.

Funny but flawed

Dirty humor with excessive 4th wall breaks that last to long. On the whole I enjoyed it, but I would only be able to recommend it to a fan of Deadpool.

For ALL audiences

Proof that a book for younger audiences doesn't half to be childish. Like the greater Spellmonger series this book does not shy away from the older gender norms or reflexive bigotry in the historic period that inspired the fantasy setting. Difficult subjects are dealt with in a way that does not feel preachy.
