Historia
Wittgenstein's Mistress is a novel unlike anything David Markson or anyone else has ever written before. It is the story of a woman who is convinced and, astonishingly, will ultimately convince the listener as well that she is the only person left on earth. Presumably she is mad. And yet so appealing is her character, and so witty and seductive her narrative voice, that we will follow her hypnotically as she unloads the intellectual baggage of a lifetime in a series of irreverent meditations on everything and everybody from Brahms to sex to Heidegger to Helen of Troy.

This is brilliant. If you like both Wittgenstein and experimental fiction, try this out. It’s incredibly creative.

The most famous date in history is 1066, and with good reason, since no battle in medieval history had such a devastating effect on its losers as the Battle of Hastings, which altered the entire course of English history.

Historia
On the morning after the 2016 presidential election, Thomas Ricks awoke with a few questions on his mind: What kind of nation did we now have? Is it what was designed or intended by the nation's founders? Trying to get as close to the source as he could, Ricks decided to go back and read the philosophy and literature that shaped the founders' thinking, and the letters they wrote to each other debating these crucial works—among them the Iliad, Plutarch's Lives, and the works of Xenophon, Epicurus, Aristotle, Cato, and Cicero.

Went too Hollywood or something
Revisado: 01-12-24
This one got too much like a formulaic movie. It almost feels like someone else wrote it, Someone who writes cheesy books with too many coincidences.
I liked the earlier ones because they didn’t feel as formulaic. I think I’m done with the series, unfortunately. I liked the first few books a lot.

I’m digging the epic nature of the narrative
Revisado: 07-13-23
Carr is giving us a fictional history of a possible world that would appear on the surface very much like our own.
It’s a history with conflicting fundamental, and philosophically substantive, ideologies — honor vs. some flavor of utilitarianism.
The scale of the universe Carr is creating is approaching Lord of the Rings epic-ness, while not being fantasy.
The depth, rich characters, and highly intentional plotting is sprinkled with detailed descriptions of cool guy sh*t. (You’ll be googling trying to buy some of it.)
Carr’s the best around right now.
Get this book. But get all the previous ones first.

In the process of searching for Pinch, a long-lost mythic figure who has attained a talismanic status, Gibs has resorted to making a living doing contract work with his friend Alan, the young man who followed him out of the Wyoming commune. Hired by a family as escorts on a cross-country trip to Texas, they are ambushed by a group of raiders. The family is captured, children and all, and Gibs and Alan are left behind with only some pistols, a handful of bullets between them, and no food or water to speak of.

Better than the last one but not good
Revisado: 06-30-23
I have a feeling this book and the last one were ghostwritten. The first four were intelligent — much smarter than most books in the genre.
This book isn’t terrible. (The last one was.) But it’s mostly unrelated to books 1-4.
The speeches by the bad guy are awkward to listen to. I wonder if Bray felt weird doing those parts. Pretty cringe.
I hope the author returns to the commune in the next book. Otherwise I’m done.

Historia
Books and Bug are polar opposites, despite their friendship. Rumors on the road speak of a hospital in Washing D.C. Leading a small group of survivors, including pregnant women, the two travel in earnest to provide the soon-to-be mothers a safe place to deliver. Bug–a natural, charismatic leader–refuses to leave anyone behind while Books–a pragmatic social outsider–wishes not to be responsible for the safety of others. Together, they're exactly what this group needs to survive. But DC isn't exactly the safe haven they hoped for.

The others are great. This one has no meaningful relationship to the others. It’s as if some else’s book was used out of desperation by the publisher. Really bad.
