Historia
Antoinette Conway, the tough, abrasive detective from The Secret Place, is still on the Murder Squad, but only just. She's partnered up with Stephen Moran now, and that's going well - but the rest of her working life isn't. Peerless
Revisado: 01-31-18
Tana French is in a class of her own. Her characters are fully fleshed out individuals with flaws and fears that avoid the usual police procedural/detective cliches yet also serve to make them highly relatable. Throughout the Murder Squad series, French effortlessly conveys the rich interior lives of her main protagonists and this offering is no exception. Her use of language creates a rhythm that plays out with both beauty and tension. A true literary crime thriller. Superb.

Historia
DS Jane Bennett takes charge of South London's Lewisham murder squad following the temporary suspension of her boss, DI Mike Lockyer. His involvement with a female witness resulted in her murder. Mike returns to work, but he's a shadow of the detective he was a few months before. Bennett gets a desperate call from an old friend to say that her husband, retired colleague Mark Leech, has gone missing. Blood spatters found in the home suggest she doesn't have long to find him.

Good story, great performance, overblown ending
Revisado: 07-12-15
Very solid and compelling plot, but the end was OTT and dragged the whole book down for me. However, definitely willing to give more books by this author a read. Very good narrator-character voices were well differentiated and well matched.

Get hooked on Heck: the maverick detective who knows no boundaries. A grisly whodunit you won't be able to put down, perfect for fans of Stuart MacBride and TV series Luther. Heck needs to watch his back. Because someone's watching him... Across the south of England, a series of bizarre but fatal accidents are taking place. So when a local businessman survives a near-drowning but is found burnt alive in his car just weeks later, DS Mark 'Heck' Heckenburg is brought in to investigate.

Solid story idea, poor characterisation
Revisado: 07-02-15
Solid story idea undermined by poor characterisation, especially of the female characters. Would perhaps have tolerated this in first of a series by new author, but not so much in fifth book in a series. However, story idea was sufficient to carry me through to the end of the book.
