Historia
On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment? Hampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration.

Modern Progressive Slant

First the positive. The reading was superb. The story is well written and obviously well researched. But the political revisionist history ruins it for me. Just tell the story. Don’t moralize about Europeans despoiling primitive paradise. Especially excusing murder, and cannibalism as noble rituals while holding 18th century sailors to 21st century standards. Unless you are looking to wallow in white guilt just skip this and read one of the other earlier Cook biographies.

Ordinary at best
Revisado: 06-23-10
Connelly is just going through the motions here. I think he wrote this one while concentrating on something else. Barely held my interest. Not bad enough to stop listening but I was happy to hear it end.

Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

I can't take it any more! I'm halfway through this mess and, for the first time in my Audible career, I have to quit. I guess there is some suspense in here somewhere but I can't wait around to find it and now I don't care. Sophomoric (and soporific) writing just one level above a comic book. Characterizations right out of a 1950's John Wayne movie. Is this really the same guy that wrote "The Winner?" I'm moving on.

Very Disappointing
Revisado: 07-28-05
Sophomoric, cliche-ridden writing. I love books about Las Vegas and the gambling culture, but this one was poor. The plot premise was intriguing but I kept getting diverted by the comic-book style writing. Swain- Never again.
