Historia
At thirty-five, Elsie Robinson feared she’d lost it all. Reeling from a divorce in 1917, she had no means to support herself and her chronically ill son. She dreamed of becoming a writer and was willing to sacrifice everything for this goal, even swinging a pickax in a gold mine to pay the bills. When the mine shut down, she moved to the Bay Area, where she barged into the offices of the Oakland Tribune and was hired on the spot. She went on to become a nationally syndicated columnist and household name whose column ran for over thirty years and garnered fifty million readers.

having been born in the bay area, myself, I often enjoy stories situated there. This one no less. But most of all this story touched met, because it was about a woman, drawing on her strengths and talents, to make it on her own.

Sure do wish I had had this information when my kids were teens. It would have saved a lot of trauma and heartache at that time and later in their lives and mine.

Revisiting the Akha!
Revisado: 06-12-17
What did you love best about The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane?
I was glued to the book throughout, not only because it is a well written story, but because I visited an Akha village in northern Thailand, spending a day in the area. I was so taken by their dress and what beautiful people they are. So, as I listener, I had the people and their village in my mind's eye.

A rehash of the Cameron & Knizhnik book.
Revisado: 09-19-16
Any additional comments?
I had read Cameron & Knizhnik's The Notorious RBG just before this and felt it was a much more thorough and interesting telling of Ginsburg's major contributions to this important aspect of our collective, recent history. Sisters In Law, however, does fill in how Sandra Day O'Connor fits into the Court's history as the first woman on the court.

Historia
For a young American boy in the 1950s, Fontainebleau was a sight both strange and majestic, home to a continual series of adventures: a different language to learn, weekend visits to nearby Paris, family road trips to Spain and Italy. Then there was the château itself: a sprawling palace once the residence of kings, its grounds the perfect place to play hide-and-seek. The curiosities of the small town left such an impression on him that 30 years later, Thad Carhart returned to France with his wife to raise their two children.

Interesting return to Europe/France in the 1950s
Revisado: 06-20-16
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed the reminders of my own time in Europe and Paris in 1952. I was a teenager and Carhart's recollections brought my own experience back, adding details and depth I was totally unaware of at that time.

Historia
With the outbreak of the Civil War, the small, social, Southern town of Washington, DC, found itself caught between warring sides in a four-year battle that would determine the future of the United States. After the declaration of secession, many fascinating Southern women left the city, leaving their friends - such as Adele Cutts Douglas and Elizabeth Blair Lee - to grapple with questions of safety and sanitation as the capital was transformed into an immense Union army camp and later a hospital.

Just wasn't in the mood for this one
Revisado: 05-17-16
What disappointed you about Capital Dames?
I really like Cokie Roberts and her work. She's an excellent journalist. But some how I just wasn't in the mood for this one at this time
Would you ever listen to anything by Cokie Roberts again?
I certainly wouldn't rule it out. As I said, I respect her work.
Any additional comments?
Just wasn't what I needed at this time. I'd like to return this one.

Historia
Abounding in secluded, atmospheric parks, artists' studios, cafes, restaurants, and streets little changed since the 1800s, Paris exudes romance. The art and architecture, the cityscape, riverbanks, and the unparalleled quality of daily life are part of the equation. But the city's allure derives equally from hidden sources: querulous inhabitants, a bizarre culture of heroic negativity, and a rich historical past supplying enigmas, pleasures, and challenges.

A disappointment after Paris, Paris
Revisado: 03-21-16
Any additional comments?
This book was such a disappointment after reading and loving the same author's "Paris, Paris", which I gave three 5-stars. In Passion for Paris, I found I wasn't interested in his telling of the historic characters' lives and relationships. Additionally, the narrator made me a bit crazy. David Bowie is from San Francisco and the narrator in "Paris, Paris", an American with a passable French accent seemed very believable as Bowie telling of his experiences of various parts of Paris.
The "Passion" narrator Jean Brassard, of course had an excellent French accent, but I had a very hard time dealing with the fact that he was telling an American's story. Maybe I missed the point and with this narrator, was supposed to disregard the fact that this was written by an American ex-pat, but it bothered me.
Additionally, because I had so enjoyed Bowie's "Paris, Paris", I tried hard to get through this one, but just couldn't get into his subject matter and abandoned the book about half way through.

Historia
In this highly anticipated new novel, Diana Gabaldon brings back one of her most compelling characters: the unforgettable Lord John Grey - soldier, gentleman, and no mean hand with a blade. Set in the heart of the 18th century, Lord John's world is one of mystery and menace. Diana Gabaldon brilliantly weaves together the strands of Lord John's secret and public lives.

This Good Gabaldon story needed Davina Porter
Revisado: 01-13-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I would especially recommend it if the friend friend had read Outlander series
What other book might you compare The Scottish Prisoner to and why?
All of the Outlander series are comparable but better for their Davina Porter narration
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
At times it was confusing having two different narrators. In the beginning one was especially disappointing as he kept coming up with an Irish, rather than Scottish accent for Jamie.
Any additional comments?
I finished the seventh of the Outlander series over a year ago, knowing that I would have to wait some years for Gabaldon's eighth in the series. In the interim, I've read many books by other authors. Enjoyed some, not others. Lately I ran out of books I even wanted to try, so turned to The Scottish Prisoner, knowing that Gabaldon was such a good writer, though I had heard that the narration was disappointing.True, the narration didn't hold a candle to that of Davina Porter, but the story and especially Gabaldon's writing was so compelling that it was well worth the read. It did satisfy my Outlander cravings, thought very short by comparison to any Outlander book. -- But now, having finished The Scottish Prisoner too quickly, alas I find myself again awaiting Gabaldon's Outlander Book Eight with much anticipation!
