Historia
Newlyweds Tricia and Ethan are searching for the house of their dreams. But when they visit the remote manor that once belonged to Dr. Adrienne Hale, a renowned psychiatrist who vanished without a trace four years earlier, a violent winter storm traps them at the estate… with no chance of escape until the blizzard comes to an end. In search of a book to keep her entertained until the snow abates, Tricia happens upon a secret room. One that contains audio transcripts from every single patient Dr. Hale has ever interviewed.

I wanted to like it, really
Revisado: 09-22-23
I wanted to think it was commentary, maybe something that would dissect cliches. As a psychology major, I'm insulted by the half-hearted pop psych drivel. The 'twist' in retrospect doesn't make sense. None of the characters are believable, relatable, or interesting. Sure, despicable characters could be fun in a crime fiction novel, but the 'drama' was well...insultingly obvious? It seemed as though the author didn't trust that readers would catch on, so in the following chapter they would summarize what we were supposed to get out of that encounter. I almost didn't want to finish it around the hour mark.

Historia
People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semifinals, and they actually have a shot at winning.

subtext done right
Revisado: 10-06-22
We all know that small town desperate to do whatever it takes to win. This story is filled with life lessons, hope, and drama. What is implied speaks so much louder than the text itself and the performance upheld that.

Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders, but her father's inability to collect his debts has left his family on the edge of poverty - until Miryem takes matters into her own hands. Hardening her heart, the young woman sets out to claim what is owed and soon gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. When an ill-advised boast draws the attention of the king of the Staryk - grim fey creatures who seem more ice than flesh - Miryem's fate, and that of two kingdoms, will be forever altered.

Fantastic start, troublesome middle, and ok end
Revisado: 02-14-22
The opening really sold me on the idea of the major themes in the story, but I quickly found out that it was far more magical than I expected. I originally believed it would steer more into people 'treating' her like a fairytale to talk around the campfire, instead of the fairytales coming true. There are multiple P.O.V's that don't seem to have a pattern to them, just whatever is most convenient to tell the narrative. This is only perpetuated when the narrative shifts and it's difficult to tell who is speaking. The ending seemed to tie itself together well. However, tieing up all the loose ends takes an incredible amount of time. Constantly checked the time to see that I still had 4-6 hours to go. But the 'happy ending' was very earned by the characters, if not a little cheesy.

It’s an uncertain time in the Fertile Plains. Sixty cycles have passed since Alönia won the Protectorate War, but time and conflict have eroded the security gained through that great struggle. As Alönia wades through internal squabbling, David rises above his tragic childhood and earns a place as an aide to a powerful politician.

I was so excited to see a political steampunk-esc novel. However, as the story continued on, it hardly did much to expand on interesting or new topics. Our protagonist is a standard "everyman" who takes care of his paralyzed mother. Perfect grades, flawless witt, and apparently boyish "charm". He gets a job with his favorite politician and given an impossible task on the first day. As the story went on, I felt as though it was like "a pie with no filling."
