interesting premise, good narration
Revisado: 03-25-25
intriguing premise
narration was good
writing style was… unpolished (characters seemed "stiff" - they seemed to be there just to move the story along without actually being present in it)

Interesting & engaging story, but a bit too long & heavy-handed
Revisado: 02-20-25
like to the two previous works in this series I found the story to be quite interesting & engaging. I like how, so far, each book focuses on a main character, examining their background and how it all interconnects with the larger cast of characters.
and, much like the previous two works in this series, I couldn't wait for it to finally end. there's a bit too much repetition and heavy-handedness in the writing - feels (to me) like they could be tightened up (cutting the audio length by 2 - 3 hours). this might be one of those times where it READS (paper & ink) better than it narrates. What seems like heavy-handed repetition listening to the story quite likely serves to drive an emotional level when reading the print version.

Historia
The Alt Apocalypse is the ground-breaking, genre-bending series from Tom Abrahams. It explores survival under the most extreme circumstances, but with a twist (and no cliff-hangers). This series, which can be listened to in any order, features the same core characters in each complete story. But every book dunks them into a new, alternate apocalypse; a nuclear holocaust, an earthquake, a flood, a wildfire, a hurricane, a plague, and even zombies.

interesting premise / so-so writing style
Revisado: 01-14-25
This was my first experience with Tom Abrahams. The premise was intriguing and overall the story/stories were interesting. Unfortunately, for me, Abrahams' writing style was … "lacking". Were it not for Kevin Pierce's quality narration I doubt that I would have continued past the second book.
Overall: not bad … but nothing that makes me read/listen to anything else by this writer.

Historia
Meet Laszlo, eight-hundred-year-old demon and Hell’s least productive Curse Keeper. From his office beneath Midtown, he oversees the Drakeford Curse, which involves a pathetic family upstate and a mysterious black monolith. It’s a sexy enough assignment—colonial origins, mutating victims, et cetera—but Laszlo has no interest in maximizing the curse’s potential; he’d rather sunbathe in Ibiza, quaff martinis, and hustle the hustlers on Manhattan’s subway.

Incredibly engaging story with perfect narration
Revisado: 12-05-24
One of the most interesting & engaging stories I've listened to in a long time. Never quite sure what would happen next, but in an organic flow with the story rather than a surprise plot twist. The story is matched with excellent narration & voice acting.

Historia
Vampires and humans live side by side thanks to an uneasy peace maintained by the Assembly. As an Arbiter for the powerful organization, Miles Watson is authorized to act as judge, jury, and executioner for anyone—living or undead—who breaks the law. But now Miles is up against a threat more sinister than anything he's seen in his centuries as a vampire. A criminal network in London is offering wealthy humans the chance to become vampires without the Assembly's consent. When the process goes disastrously wrong, the Boss wants to eliminate any trace of the fiasco.

Entertaining story / unpolished writing
Revisado: 05-13-24
Overall, the story was quite enjoyable, but… the quality of the writing left a lot to be desired. The writing was very amateurish and somewhat heavy-handed.
Fortunately, the story itself was intriguing enough to keep me listening.

Historia
Gabe escaped the Ether with the ultimate prize, and he thought that meant he was done with deadly cosmic games. But the nightmares infesting his life have different plans, and they’re not asking nicely before dragging him back in. It turns out holding all the power in the universe doesn’t mean much if you have no idea what to do with it. So together with Heather, he embarks on a frantic race to collect the remaining six Iglas and stave off the coming darkness. And in the process, they discover just how much deeper their problems go.

it's ok, but…
Revisado: 02-11-24
the first book of this series started out strong. the second was a little less, but still quite enjoyable. this, the third, required some effort to get through.
the overall story/plot is still interesting & engaging, but the writing has become heavy-handed and overly verbose. it felt more like a quickly finished rough draft that could (and should) have been edited to something a lot tighter and a bit shorter. each audiobook in the series is longer than the previous - for me, this is a case of "less is more" because "more" is sluggish & plodding (at least compared to the first book)
I'll give the fourth book a try mostly to see where the author takes the story, but if the pacing and heavy-handed writing are like this one (the third book) then I doubt I'll continue with any others in the series.

Revisado: 04-11-23
still as good as I remember from when I read it back when it was first published in print edition.
never have understood how "Hollywood" was able to to so totally butcher "Johnny Mnemonic"
trivia: the music group Implant used part (maybe the last 1/4) of "Fragments of a Hologram Rose" in their song "Was It Always This Way" (definitely worth checking out)

Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal—including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want. But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other.

didn't hate it - didn't love it
Revisado: 03-22-23
For me, Phillip Pullman is able to create a fascinating story while at the same time is a rather mediocre writer. Meaning, I greatly enjoyed the story, but not the Pullman's writing style.
There was also something not quite satisfying about the having a cast dramatize the story rather than have a single narrator. I've listened to other audiobooks with cast dramatizations and enjoyed them, but this one - not so much. The individual character's performances were good - but somehow they didn't seem to work together.
I'll definitely finish the trilogy because the story is quite engaging - I just wish that Pullman's writing style was more to my liking and that the consistency of a single narrator would a much better presentation

True power is living the realization that you are your own healer, hero, and leader. Inward is a collection of poetry, quotes, and prose that explores the movement from self-love to unconditional love, the power of letting go, and the wisdom that comes when we truly try to know ourselves. It serves as a reminder to the listener that healing, transformation, and freedom are possible.

better to read the printed version… but this is still good
Revisado: 02-08-23
Over several years I have become familiar with Yung Pueblo's observations - almost always as single, stand-alone observations. This audiobook was my first experience with Yung Pueblo's writings in "book form". Listening to it was good/enjoyable, but it feels to me that this is a book that is best read in it's printed form, than listened to. Regardless, this is still a good collection of insights & observations.

Historia
On a desolate beach in far northern Scotland, the winter storms have been washing up all manner of things since time began. But buried in the centre of one smaller iceberg is a shard of ancient Viking pottery telling a partial tale of a hidden mysterious island beyond the ice and mist, that was home to a great treasure and even greater horrors. Thawing in the same block of ice was a rotting flap of skin that refused to be identified but had similar skin patterns to a creature not seen for 100 million years.
