This book describes in detail, the courageous acts of three young women, operating as part of the Dutch resistance against the Nazi occupation of their homeland. It is very well told, clear and concise and reads at a clip, which makes it an easy and enticing. listen. It is a short seven hour audiobook. Historia
Ken McElroy was killed outside, in broad daylight, with some 60 witnesses watching -- and yet no one copped to having seen a thing. McElroy, who'd long been known as a town bully in Skidmore, Missouri, was shot dead in 1981 after terrorizing his neighbors, two of whom he shot. When the system seemed to fail at holding McElroy accountable, townsfolk took matters into their own hands. "Crimes of the Centuries" is a podcast from Grab Bag Collab exploring forgotten crimes from times past that made a mark and helped change history. Follow us on Instagram and Twitter: @centuriespod

When Pushed Too Hard ..
Revisado: 10-12-24
People will seek their own justice. I was familiar with this incident and honestly feel McElroy got away with his crimes far too long. The guy was pure hatred and got exactly what he deserved.

Historia
On September 6, 1949, 28-year-old Howard Barton Unruh shot 13 people, in less than 12 minutes, on his block in East Camden, New Jersey. The shocking, true story of the first recorded mass-shooting in America has never been told, until now. Through the eyes of the young boy who visited Howard regularly to listen to his war stories, and the mother trying to piece together the disturbing inner-workings of her son’s mind, Ellen Green uncovers the chilling true story of Howard Unruh - the quiet oddball who meticulously plotted his revenge on the neighbors who shunned him.

Having known about this “first” mass killing for many years, I found this account to be fresh and interesting. Narration was excellent as was the research supporting the story. If you are a True Crime buff, you will find this quick listen well worth your time!

Historia
In a gay nightclub in Orlando on June 12, 2016, the shooter, Omar Mateen, murdered 49 people and wounded 53 others. The attack was the deadliest act of violence against the LGBTQ+ community in US history and the deadliest terrorist attack in the United States since 9/11. But there’s a story you haven’t heard. The FBI had a secret history with the shooter and his father. To obscure that history, the FBI pushed a false story that the media dutifully carried—that the attacker was a secretly gay Islamist extremist who had chosen to target Pulse and planned the attack for weeks.

Could Have Done Without the “Opinion.”
Revisado: 09-16-24
This is a very interesting review, and deep dive into previously unknown facts about the Pulse killings. Sadly, the fact that our government would put forth a false narrative and lie to cover up their incompetence is not at all surprising.
The authors research, and overall production quality of the program is excellent. However, the interjection of his political views on gun violence, mental health issues, and the ability of society to deal with them is unwarranted and not relevant to the story.
You uncovered facts which present a new, and I believe, true perspective. However, you condemn directly and by innuendo, the constitutional right of citizens, to own firearms for protection, recreation, or civil defense. That in itself is not necessarily wrong in this format, but you offer no answers.
I have rated the production highly because it is very well done and very absorbing. Just stick to the facts that you have brought forth and leave the sermonizing to others.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

So, What Do We Do?
Revisado: 08-02-24
This is indeed, a terrifying and fabulous accounting told in a meticulous and fascinating way. I do not take umbrage to anything in the book. However, I would ask the author one thing. How do we get all of the nuclear players to come to the table and agree to give up their toys? Just like the author has written, this nightmare scenario begins with a very minor nuclear participant, and most probably one who would never abide by any agreement. And now Iran stands on the verge of becoming a nuclear power, with even less regard for humanity. So, along with showing us what doomsday, and the end of the world looks like, how about some suggestions as to how all of this can be averted with the players we have?

Historia
The 29-day battle to liberate Manila resulted in the catastrophic destruction of the city and a rampage by Japanese forces that brutalized the civilian population. Landmarks were demolished, houses were torched, suspected resistance fighters were tortured and killed, countless women were raped, and their husbands and children were murdered. American troops had no choice but to battle the enemy, floor by floor and even room by room, through schools, hospitals, and even sports stadiums. In the end, an estimated 100,000 civilians lost their lives in the massacre.

A terrifying account ..
Revisado: 07-31-24
The Japanese atrocities detailed in this book border on unbelievable. Historically, accurate and more frightening than any fiction, the capacity for man’s inhumanity to man is born out. If you are a historical buff with interest in the second world war, then you really should give this book a listen, This however, is not an enjoyable listen. It is not meant to be.
When one is going through the book, you ask yourself how is this possible? Not only is it possible, horrors like this continue to this day?

An Excellent Account of the Disaster
Revisado: 07-27-24
This account of the terrible, yet very avoidable. Disaster is well worth your time. It is not bland as one might expect a subject involving so much technical perspective and engineering discussion. The author has gone to great lengths to bring out interesting details of the people involved in all aspects of this terrible accident without going into detail, I will just say it was a very interesting, educational, and enjoyable, listen.

Very Good Listen ..
Revisado: 03-18-24
The account was bereft of background detail which I find tedious in most writings. The telling of the story is fast-paced and, with very few exceptions accurate.
As a current and life-long Memphis area resident I picked up on a couple of mistakes in some items but, to anyone not a “Memphian” alive at the time of the murder, these things are unimportant.
All-in all a great 12 - hours spent!

Historia
It was not a clever killing. On May 5, 1973, three men escaped from a Maryland prison and disappeared. Joined by a 15-year-old brother, they surfaced in Georgia, where they were spotted joyriding in a stolen car. Within a week, the four young men were arrested on suspicion of committing one of the most horrific murders in American history. Jerry Alday and his family were eating Sunday dinner when death burst through the door of their cozy little trailer. Their six bodies are only the beginning of Thomas H. Cook's retelling of this gruesome story.

A Clear and Concise Account of Pure Evil
Revisado: 03-03-24
Being interested in true crime, I found this telling of the senseless murders and rape of six innocents to be straightforward and direct. The book does not spend an inordinate time on profiling the killers or trying to excuse their crimes owing to difficult childhoods and horrible parents. It does not try to establish a reasoning or motive for the crime where six members of the same family were slaughtered on the same afternoon in 1973. Other than the random and inhumanity of the killers, there is no motive or relatable reason how something like this could have ever happened.
The story is void of the usual “filler” material, opting rather to concentrate on what occurred and how the killers where quickly caught. Sadly, our broken justice system is once again put, (or should be put), on trial for not meting out real justice quickly and irreparably.
I’d venture a guess that many true crime devotees aren’t familiar with the “Alday” case. This story is quick, thorough and sickening. It is well told with an appropriate narration in tow.
