King Liam, First of His Name! A Belter miner of some repute! Well, he will be when he gets back from his journey to the Oort Cloud. He often fantasizes about the looks on everyone’s face when he comes waltzing back to Ceres in the asteroid belt, richer than any belter has ever been. Oh sure, four years of isolation might have left him a little touched, but he only has four more years to go. He just has to make it to a secret planetoid he found—call it Lucky Strike!—and all his dreams will come true. What could go wrong?

Historia
Viv's career with the notorious mercenary company Rackam's Ravens isn't going as planned. Wounded during the hunt for a powerful necromancer, she's packed off against her will to recuperate in the sleepy beach town of Murk—so far from the action that she worries she'll never be able to return to it. What's a thwarted soldier of fortune to do? Spending her hours at a beleaguered bookshop in the company of its foul-mouthed proprietor is the last thing Viv would have predicted, but it may be both exactly what she needs and the seed of changes she couldn't possibly imagine.

Anything Travis Baldree writes. . .
Revisado: 11-29-23
When I read legends and lattes, I was surprised at how much I loved the book. I love the characters and the writing, and the story and just warm, fuzzy feeling that I got from a fantasy novel about an orc warrior! Who knew? So when the second book came out, bookstores and bone dust, I thought well it’s got to be at least as good as that one, and it turned out that it was in fact, I think it was better. It’s now cemented in my mind that travis Baldree writes the kind of books that I will continue to love and buy and read over and over again.

Hannah Brooks looks more like a kindergarten teacher than somebody who could kill you with a wine bottle opener. Or a ballpoint pen. Or a dinner napkin. But the truth is, she’s an Executive Protection Agent (aka "bodyguard"), and she just got hired to protect superstar actor Jack Stapleton from his middle-aged, corgi-breeding stalker.

My favorite book of the year!
Revisado: 06-12-23
I read a lot, listen to audiobooks constantly, and almost never write a review. People have such different tastes and what one person lives, another hates so what good is reading reviews? We’ll, after I finished this book, with a smile on my face and a warm spot in my heart, I sat down immediately to read the reviews and write my own. Have you ever wished you could write a rebuttal to a disappointing’ review? I sure did after reading some of these reviews. The author wrote this book during her pandemic lockdown, and is beautiful, and funny, and hopeful. The narrator is perfect, the ending is perfect, and the message is perfect. I couldn’t find politics anywhere in this book! I could not find anything anyone was whining about that caused them to dislike this book, which taught me something about reviewers and reviews—I think sometimes they’re fake. They’re an excuse to trash something and see their name in print. The only thing in this sweet book that bothered me is this— when you’re in a relationship with a famous person, their famous persona disappears pretty fast. The more you get to know the real them, the less you keep reminding yourself that they’re famous. It basically disappears in the background. You only remind yourself when you see them on a screen or in a magazine, but even then it feels like you are watching another person instead of the guy who left his dirty underwear on the floor next to the clothes basket.
Download this book and take a long drive. Immerse yourself in it like the author did. You’re welcome.

Historia
Nestled in the mountain shadows of Alabama lies the little town of Wicklow. It is here that Anna Kate has returned to bury her beloved Granny Zee, owner of the Blackbird Café. It was supposed to be a quick trip to close the café and settle her grandmother’s estate, but despite her best intentions to avoid forming ties or even getting to know her father’s side of the family, Anna Kate finds herself inexplicably drawn to the quirky Southern town her mother ran away from so many years ago, and the mysterious blackbird pie everybody can’t stop talking about.

Three months ago, I landed a job as a bartender. But not at a bar-at a guild. Yeah, the magic kind. I'm not a badass mage like my three smokin' hot best friends. I'm not a sorcerer or an alchemist, or even a wussy witch. I'm just a human, slinging drinks like a pro and keeping my non-magical nose out of mythic business. Seriously, I know my limits. So why am I currently standing in a black-magic ritual circle across from a fae lord? Somewhere behind me, my three mage friends are battling for their lives.

I can’t say why I’m hooked on this series when so many other books in the same vein leave me cold after the second in the series. Maybe I’m jus impatient to get to the good stuff so I don’t like slogging through an info dump. Maybe I love the consistently upbeat tone of the series, even through each crises. Maybe I love the male/female friendships that aren’t based on sex. Whatever the reason, just get the first one before reading this one and you’ll see.

Historia
Lord Elliott Mayfield sees the new generation of his family moving in the same direction of bad matches and scandalous relationships as the last. In hopes to change their course, he establishes a "marriage campaign" to motivate them to improve themselves through making respectable matches. Peter, Elliott's eldest nephew, thinks the entire idea is ridiculous. A widower with two young daughters, he simply needs a governess, not a wife. Julia Hollingsworth has the credentials and the experience, but is too young and pretty for such a job. So why can't he stop thinking about her?

What a gem. I started listening to this book because I needed something lighthearted, so the standard trope was expected. What I didn’t expect was the sweet love affair between the older characters in the story. I raised the narration speed to 1.2 and it was perfect.

Not your common, torture-the-protagonist series!
Revisado: 09-07-21
I love this series! Lots of readers may have trouble with the lack of formulaic structure but I found it enjoyable and refreshing. I love that it meanders, that it’s personality-driven, and that the most attractive quality in most characters was/is intelligence. It’s not like any other SF out there, in a good way.

This book is comfort food for the soul. It’s sweet and funny, and gentle, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need. The recipes are perfect (my mother was Italian) and I’ve even tried to duplicate some of them. I pull this book out and listen to it again at least once a year.

Suddenly I have a new favorite series!
Revisado: 04-09-21
Usually I skip any 6 hour audiobook, assuming they need to be at least 8 hours to really do a story justice, and be worth a credit.what convinced me to try the first book in this series was Johanna Parker. Anyone who fell in love with Sookie Stackhouse in the incredible True Blood by Charlaine Harris series knows Johanna is a terrific narrator. I mourned the end of that series and searched unsuccessfully for years to find an adequate replacement. For the first few pages of Moonshine and Magic I thought, “Oh no, not another silly magic story” and almost returned it. But I was out of credits and cleaning out my pantry was a job that required a new audiobook. What I found instead was the beginning of a fun new series, wrapped in the comfort of a favorite, familiar voice. This book is a little like True Blood but without the gore, and it is every bit as engaging. Were introduced to small Southern town with a big secret, a mystery, and magic, but done in a natural believable way if that’s not an oxymoron. Engaging characters with real life relationships who just happen to posses weird talents that compel them to band together so they can live in peace. You will want to hang around for a while to get to know them. They make you feel like you know this place. I’m ordering book 2 right now.
