Brilliant and Gender bending.
Revisado: 12-10-24
Part, who done it. Part lifetime saga. Part societal discourse wrapped up in a good story. This is one of those books that left me appreciating the brilliance of a good author. A plot with characters and events that feel like background until the end. Personalities deeply drawn with normal human flaws that have wide reaching consequences, good and bad. The ending was magical and surprising. I will carry this book for a long time.
Disclaimer. I will admit at one point I almost stopped listening to the book. It was in the beginning after the main character is abducted and he is in the dark. I'm so very glad I continues to listen.

Historia
They’re calling it the "Storm of the Century", so Eric stops at the market for provisions on his way home from work. But when the unkempt and seemingly unstable young woman in front of him in line comes up short on cash, charity takes hold of his heart - 20 bucks and a ride home is the least he can do under the circumstances. The trouble is, Danielle doesn’t really have a home. She’s squatting in a cabin deep in the woods with no electricity, no heat, and nothing but the nearby river to sustain her.

Great story with average narration
Revisado: 08-09-24
Roorbach writes characters that are realistic and notable. The natural setting also becomes a character which I love. This story of two people trapped in a primitive cabin during a blizzard sounds like a cliche, but it isn't. The blizzard is a dangerous character and there are no moments of cozy safety while the weather tears things apart outside. Death is a distinct possibility. But the story is also about redemption and moving on with the help of human connection. I found the narration for the female character to be off putting. It took longer than it needed to for me to develop sympathy for her. At times I thought that this book may be better if read.

Every bit as sensuous as her other books.
Revisado: 11-06-23
This book is as rich in sensual descriptions as Alka Joshi's other two books in the series. I can almost smell the variances in the perfumes, the top notes and what lingers. There are also some rich descriptions of her food. The other two books in the trilogy serve as a good back story to the central character and her personality, but this book is also good as a stand alone.

Historia
Stanley Tucci grew up in an Italian American family that spent every night around the kitchen table. He shared the magic of those meals with us in The Tucci Cookbook and The Tucci Table, and now he takes us beyond the savory recipes and into the compelling stories behind them. Taste is a reflection on the intersection of food and life, filled with anecdotes about his growing up in Westchester, New York.

A totally enjoyable listen
Revisado: 11-06-23
Definitely a book I enjoyed more by listening to it than I would have reading it, primarily because of Stanley Tucci's narration. That said, I loved listening to it so much I bought physical copy of the book so that I could go back and read the recipes, and reread some of the stories. The food is described as part of a meal, or a celebration, or a family gathering. The food becomes a character and through the food we know the author more fully. I watched Stanley Tucci's "Searching for Italy" series. This book is different, more fun, more personal, more enjoyable than the series. This was well worth the credit.

She hopes to heal not only the dying landscape, but Aggie, too, unmade by the terrible secrets that drove the sisters out of Alaska. Inti is not the woman she once was, either, changed by the harm she’s witnessed—inflicted by humans on both the wild and each other. Yet as the wolves surprise everyone by thriving, Inti begins to let her guard down, even opening herself up to the possibility of love.

A little bit of everything
Revisado: 11-06-23
I love books where nature is one of the characters and between the forest and the wolves that is certainly true in this book. I also love a murder mystery where the perpetrator is not obvious and that happens in this book also. I love a book where the main characters are some how transformed during the course of the story and that happens in this book also. I wanted to know what would happen, to the wolves, the main characters, the town. It kept my interest. To top it all off is Saskia Maarleveld's narration. She is one of my favorites and she definitely helped bring suspense and interest to this listen. Well worth the time and the credit.

Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t. They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends.

A fun romp- Julia Whelan shines
Revisado: 07-10-23
I swear I would give the dictionary 5 stars if Julia Whelan performed it. She is the star of this book. Its a romance, by definition it is formulaic. However, I think Emily Henry writes great dialogue and at times I laugh out loud. I also respect her novels because there is usually an underlying theme that is helpful for women. The books by this author that I've read usually have central characters who need to free themselves of emotional baggage from childhood before they can be in an authentic and healthy relationship. That happens in this book too. What keeps me listening to Emily Henry's books is that the emotional baggage is relatable and the damage to relationships rings true. I generally don't like romance novels, but I like Emily Henry's books, especially if they are performed by Julia Whelan.

Incredible, with a trigger warning
Revisado: 06-22-23
This book should come with a trigger warning for people who have experienced sexual trauma, especially over a prolonged period of time by someone who is older. OK, with that out of the way- this book was amazing. This is a piece of writing that captures fully and seemingly effortlessly the experiences and feelings and ambiguity of adolescence and young adulthood so perfectly that at times you feel you are the character. This is a very difficult subject and the author does not give easy answers or solutions to the situations or the characters. The ambiguity experienced by the main character is palpable and heart wrenching. There is redemption, but it is realistic and authentic. It rings true. I was VERY glad I listed to the very end for the interviews with the author and the narrator, there are two of them. They helped clarify some things and helped me disentangle myself from the experience of the book so I could view it objectively. Amazing book.

I couldn't finish it.
Revisado: 06-22-23
It is a rare book that I don't finish, but this one I quit after a few hours of listening. To be fair I knew it was going to be a book about learning the secrets of the past, of horrible acts that were excused and accepted. I'd read of bunch of those books lately and I wasn't in the mood for another one. I felt like I knew how the book would proceed. I couldn't get interested in the characters early enough to stay with it. On the plus side I learned something new, something I should have known, and I learned about something that if it still exists should be exposed and stopped. I may pick this up again later.

Historia
After Jim O’Connell graduated from Harvard Medical School and was nearing the end of his residency at Massachusetts General, the hospital’s chief of medicine made a proposal: Would he defer a prestigious fellowship and spend a year helping to create an organization to bring health care to homeless citizens? That year turned into O’Connell’s life’s calling. Tracy Kidder spent five years following Dr. O’Connell and his colleagues as they work with thousands of homeless patients, some of whom we meet in this illuminating book.

Another gem by Tracy Kidder
Revisado: 06-22-23
Tracy Kidder picks interesting people to study and highlight. I loved hearing this story about Jim O'connell's work in Boston with the chronically homeless. I like how he humanizes the situation of chronic homelessness and puts an important face on the humanity of the problem. He highlights the policies that both help and hinder our ability to end homelessness. It is a story filled with humanity, compassion, concern and love and because of that it is a book about hope.. Everyone who has ever had a thought about homelessness should read or listen to this book.
