Historia
They look alike, but they live in very different worlds. Tom Canty, impoverished and abused by his father, is fascinated with royalty. Edward Tudor, heir to the throne of England, is kind and generous but wants to run free and play in the river - just once. How insubstantial their differences truly are becomes clear when a chance encounter leads to an exchange of clothing - and roles. The pauper finds himself caught up in the pomp and folly of the royal court, and the prince wanders horror-stricken through the lower strata of English society.

Revisado: 05-02-24
Nicholas Ralph has the most gorgeous brogue & performs so many different voices—sometimes within one breath! I think in addition to being a magnificent actor he’s also a ventriloquist! If this is the last in the ”Creatures” series (all of which I adore— how about RL Stevenson or Walter Scott?? Please, thank you!💛❤️🧡

Historia
The story that made Agatha Christie famous ends with one of her most dramatic twists. The villagers of King’s Abbot are shocked when a wealthy local widow commits suicide and the very next day her fiancé, Roger Ackroyd, is stabbed to death. Dr. James Sheppard, the local physician, discovers the body of his friend and narrates the ensuing hunt for the killer. All the guests and staff at Ackroyd's country house seem to have solid alibis - except for his missing stepson.

Richard Armitage & Agatha!!
Revisado: 03-05-24
Richard Armitage voice —& VOICES—never fail to mesmerize me, & Christie’s genius is gasp-worthy. Apparently Captain Hastings—Poirot’s usual wingman—has left for the “Argentine” & Poirot has attempted retirement in a small nosey village where a murder must be solved. Who better to assist in the investigation—& deliver the play-by-play than Poirot’s neighbor, the doctor? Such fun! I listened on long winter walks —& had to keep listening after I got home! What an ending!!🤗

All Things Bright and Beautiful is the beloved sequel to Herriot's first collection, All Creatures Great and Small, and picks up as Herriot, now newly married, journeys among the remote hillside farms and valley towns of the Yorkshire Dales, caring for their inhabitants - both two- and four-legged. Throughout, Herriot's deep compassion, humor, and love of life shine as we laugh, cry, and delight in the portraits of his many varied animal patients and their equally varied owners.

Historia
William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all.

Historia
In 1697, Quebec is an island of French civilization perched on a bare gray rock amid a wilderness of trackless forests. For many of its settlers, Quebec is a place of exile, so remote that an entire winter passes without a word from home. But to 12-year-old Cécile Auclair, the rock is home, where even the formidable Governor Frontenac entertains children in his palace and beavers lie beside the lambs in a Christmas créche.

An Unforgettable Journey!
Revisado: 12-02-23
Another unforgettable Cather tale of Old World Europeans struggling to create an outpost of “civilization” in the New World—in this case the early French colonists who settle on an outcrop (the “Rock”) on the St Lawrence River that will one day become Quebec City. No writer so breathtakingly captures the power & presence of geography & seasons. Long months of wintry isolation, ecstatic springtimes when ships last seen in October return bearing long-awaited news, gifts, & seafarers’ lore. The characters are charming, sympathetic & quirky. There are saints & shoemakers & apothecaries, battling bishops & sea captains with parrots. The prose is painterly & gorgeous & the narrator is wonderful, mesmerizing in both English & French!🥰

Historia
Frances Hodgson Burnett published The Making of a Marchioness in 1901. She had written Little Lord Fauntleroy 15 years before and would write The Secret Garden in 10 years' time; it is these two books for which she is best known. Yet Marchioness was one of Nancy Mitford's favourite books, was considered 'the best novel Mrs Hodgson Burnett wrote' by Marghanita Laski, and is taught on a university course in America together with novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Daisy Miller.

Historia
Since it was first published more than 25 years ago, Robert Fitzgerald's prizewinning translation of Homer's battle epic has become a classic in its own right: a standard against which all other versions of The Iliad are compared. Fitzgerald's work is accessible, ironic, faithful, written in a swift vernacular blank verse that "makes Homer live as never before" ( Library Journal).

I SECOND “PERFECT NARRATION”!!!
Revisado: 09-07-23
Omg, Dan Stevens delivers another pitch-perfect, passionate, masterful “performance,” meaning it never felt performative. More like he is channeling this epic of war—so unsparing in its gory details of death, yet attaching to each character’s name—whether mortal or god—an epithet describing the quality or prowess by which he is known; and a recitation of his lineage & history. No life or loss or friendship goes unacknowledged or unmourned. Achilles’s grief for Patroclus is overwhelming, worthy of grand opera. Of course, such gravitas is reserved for the men! Im grateful to Dan Stevens for sharing HIS Iliad & Odyssey. How to say Bravo in Ancient Greek?(-:
